Low-profile Coachbuilt Motorhomes

MMM editorial

The Verdict

Low-profile motorhomes are the season's must have... and for good reason. They are sleek, better looking and can be packed with equipment that means some now rival A-class motorhomes in terms of comfort, room and practicality. The arrival of electric drop-down beds above the lounge, along with fixed doubles or singles above a garage in the rear make them great for families and couples alike.

At a glance

The pros and cons of low-profile coachbuilt motorhomes are

  • Less wind resistance
  • Many new models now come with drop-down lounge beds, as well as fixed doubles in the rear
  • More attractive, sleeker external look
  • Not all low profiles are that low
  • Payload may be limited
  • Prices vary massively, with some high-end low-profiles costing as much as an A-class

Full details

Since low-profile motorhomes first made an appearance, they have gained a loyal – and growing – following

That's not to say that this type of motorhome is generally lower overall, some can be as tall as overcabs, depending on chassis, style and interior height

Many recent low profiles come with a curving skylight above the cab, which lets in a huge amount of natural light. These new skylights are either fixed and non-fixed, the former providing extra ventilation. These rooflights create really airy lounge areas.

Some low-profiles can offer a good level of storage above the cab and some offer none. This needs to be taken into consideration, especially if you need somewhere to store extra bedding.

In recent years, European manufacturers have introduced drop-down beds above the lounge in their low-profile models. These beds were once only found in A-class motorhomes, but they suit the low-profile design perfectly.

To date, no British manufacturer produces a low-profile with a drop-down bed, but this will change, possibly as early as the 2014 season.

Because of the addition of the new double drop-down above the lounge, these low-profiles are now viable family motorhomes as well as being suited for couples who occassionally take their grandchildren away. Many of the newer low-profiles feature a fixed double at the rear or two singles. These beds often sit above a large garage, which means there could well be space to store bicycles inside (but check payload).

It's not surprising that low-profiles have become the latest fashion in the motorhome world - they are sleeker and look better on the road, they have some great layouts that give couples and families all they need inside and many have ample storage as well.
