Drop-down Bed Motorhome Layouts

MMM editorial

The Verdict

Once the preserve of A-class motorhomes, drop-down beds are now available in low-profile coachbuilts. Sitting over the lounge or cab, the drop-down double requires no bed-making is available often at the touch of a button in motorhomes equipped with electric bed lifts. Sometimes the drop-down can be stopped at varying levels, so the lounge can (in theory) still be used while someone sleeps above. In motorhomes with a fixed double bed at the rear, you have the advantage of four ready-made berths.

At a glance

The pros and cons of a drop-down layout are:

  • Beds are out of the way during the day
  • High in the comfort stakes
  • Ready made double, often available at the touch of a button
  • Drop-down beds can restrict headroom
  • Geting into and out of the bed can be tricky
  • Exterior profile can be higher

Full details

Drop-down double bed motorhomes are very popular, and for good reason – you have a ready-made double bed available at the touch of a button (or turn of a handle) and which tucks away into the lounge roof during the day.

The drop-down beds were once only found in A-class motorhomes where they drop down over the cab seats (which need to be folded down) but you can now find them in a range of low-profile coachbuilts. In these, the drop-down beds sit above the lounge.

While they are great for comfort, as you generally get domestic comfort levels from the mattress, one has to consider access to the bed. Generally you will need to get into bed using a ladder, so try it and make sure you can get in and out of bed easily.

Also the partner sleeping at the cab end will have to climb over his/her partner and then climb down a ladder to get out of bed.

In some models, you can sit in the lounge under the bed while it is in use. In others you can use the kitchen with the bed down. In many you can still use the external door with the drop-down bed in use.

While manufacturers try to make the drop-down appear invisible when it is tucked away in the lounge roof, sometimes it can restrict headroom in a low profile's lounge area, so test it out in the showroom, especially if you're above average height.

Motorhomes equipped with a drop-down double in the front and either bunk beds or a double bed in the rear can make ideal family motorhomes, as all the beds are ready-made and available and, if the rear bed or bunks can be curtained off, the adults can relax in the lounge and use the drop-down for sleeping without disturbing the children.
