The top 5 places in Wales to visit with your motorhome: Portmeirion

5d68eeac-03bb-40f2-a963-fd0ee5301312

Wales is a beautiful country with a whole host of attractions. Here we continue our top 5 ...

2) Unique Portmeirion

Set on its own private peninsula on the southern shores of Snowdonia, Portmeirion is north Wales’ premier visitor attraction. Used as the set for cult sixties TV series The Prisoner, Portmeirion is not your typical Welsh village, and this is the reason it draws visitors from far and wide each year. It was designed by Welsh architect Sir Clough Williams-Ellis in the 1920s, and it represents his fantasy of a classical Italianate village in the Mediterranean, transplanted to a romantic clifftop location. It was also designed to demonstrate how a naturally beautiful place could be developed without spoiling it.

You pay an entry fee (£10 for an adult, reduced to £8.50 if bought in advance online) and then step into another world. Feast your eyes on around 50 buildings, pastel-painted, with shuttered windows, a grand piazza, and 70 acres of surrounding woodland and sub-tropical gardens filled with exotic plants. There are woodland paths to explore, and when the tide is low you can walk along the sands. The village has several cafés and restaurants too and is open every day of the year.
