Why motorhome and campervan owners should consider renting out their campervans this summer
With staycations on the rise, increasing numbers of holidaymakers are looking to campervan and motorhome trips in a bid to avoid the chaos of overseas travel and enjoy a slower-paced break in the UK
But, for many newcomers to the hobby, buying a campervan is out of the question, which is where existing campervan and motorhome owners – and Camplify, a peer-to-peer campervan and motorhome rental platform – come in…

Growing demand for motorhome and campervan rentals
The Covid pandemic, airline issues, plus ever-increasing living costs and household bills, has meant that, for many, an international holiday is just not on the cards for the foreseeable future.
But the UK – as many of us have learnt over the past two years – is a haven just waiting to be explored, and many campsites are seeing a dramatic increase in bookings, as Camplify explains,
With many flights so far this year having been cancelled due to staff sickness, thousands of individuals and families across the UK have been left without their planned international holiday, and many holidaymakers are discounting international travel this summer altogether.
As a result, touring and campsite group, Haven, with 44 sites across the UK, was 90% booked over the Easter break this year, with almost half of its 2.5 million bookings to date coming from first-timers. And Parkdean Resorts, another holiday campsite heavyweight, has been forced to hire 7,000 additional workers to keep up with high levels of demand.
This increase in demand has also affected the motorhome and campervan rental market, with Camplify reporting a massive 965% increase in bookings over the first quarter – a trend which started last year when it recorded a 51% rise in booking requests (from August 2020 to August 2021) and a 141% increase in paid bookings for the same period.
The importance of ‘try before you buy’
Over 101,000 visitors attended February’s Caravan, Camping & Motorhome Show at Birmingham’s NEC, reflecting the huge appetite for leisure vehicles in the UK and the continued popularity of the staycation.
But thanks to motorhome and campervan manufacturer delays – due to Brexit and a pandemic-fuelled spike in demand – the industry is also suffering its biggest backlog to date, with many would-be owners facing a nine to 12-month wait for their new motorhome or campervan.
Camplify says,
Demand has pushed not only hirers, but also would-be owners to Camplify to hire a campervan while they wait, to satisfy their road trip wanderlust. Moreover, there are so few motorhomes and campervans available in the UK, that even test driving one before has become difficult. As a result, Camplify has seen an uplift in people looking to ‘try before they buy’.
How much could I earn renting out my motorhome or campervan?
Through communities like Camplify, there is money to be made for those of us lucky enough to already own a motorhome or campervan. But just how much could you make per week, by renting out your motorhome or campervan?
Camplify explains,
We’re all feeling the pinch at the moment. A recent survey by the Office for National Statistics (ONS) showed that 66% of adults in Britain had experienced an increase in the cost of living since January, with higher energy bills cited as a cause by four in five.
But with the typical income for a week’s rental during peak season for a four-berth coachbuilt or campervan on Camplify standing as high as £900 to £1,200, those lucky enough to own a motorhome or campervan have a great opportunity to subsidise their own income and offset the rising bills at home.
By sharing their vehicle for just two weeks of the month during June, July and August, owners are in great stead to cover their home energy bill payments for 2023!
Sam Bradley, a motorhome owner and Camplify customer from Chistlehurst, Greater London, adds,
We started sharing our first motorhome with Camplify in 2020, and as a result of our success, we acquired and listed our second at the beginning of 2021. Since then, we have received close to £19,000 in bookings, and anticipate another busy summer ahead.
Having two motorhomes on the platform has meant we're busy dealing with bookings, but the additional income has meant that my wife and I have been able to work more flexibly, and spend more time with our young children.
