Five Top Tips for Motorhome Winter Survival

3ab43c11-63cc-44c6-9dc7-421f46fdf12d

Winter has well and truly landed, temperatures are plummeting and most people are safely closed into their toasty homes. But we're not most people! Motorhomers are a hardy bunch who don’t let the weather stop them, but if you are planning a winter break in your campervan or motorhome there are some survival tips you should read.

1) Basic maintenance tips
If you are driving anywhere in your motorhome in the winter you must stock up on a few things. Antifreeze is essential, and you should mix some in with your engine coolant and your windscreen washer fluid. Before you go anywhere check your oil and water levels, and ensure your tyres are properly inflated. Check your engine for damaged rubber hoses and belts too, because they could break in very cold weather. If you are going on a particularly long journey it could be prudent to have a mechanic give your vehicle a good once over.

2) Prepare to weather the weather
You never know what the UK weather is going to do, so it is best to be prepared. With this is mind make sure you pack a snow shovel to dig your way out of any drifts. Snow chains and socks are also available for campervans to help you cruise through any conditions with relative ease.

3) Make sure sites are open!
Before you hit the road in your mobile home it is wise to do some research into campsites. This is because many close in the winter, so search for all year round campsites and plan your trip around these destinations.

4) Find a hook-up
In the cold winter it’s essential to find a campsite with an electrical hook-up. This means you can have a warm campervan whatever the weather is doing, and other home comforts such as lights, TV, radio etc. It’s fun to go completely back to nature and wild camp, but perhaps not at the coldest time of the year...

5) Pack for warmth
A winter camping trip can be incredibly cosy, but only if you pack for the cold. This means a stack of blankets and thick sleeping bags, as well as some chunky outdoor clothing, footwear and hats. You should take warming food as well, such as cans of soup and other treats that can be easily warmed up on a stove. You might want to take a bottle or two of something to warm your cockles as well on a cold winter evening.
