About Auto-Trail

Based in Grimsby, and part of the French-owned Trigano Group, Auto-Trail built its first motorhome in 1982. Many of its early vehicles were based on the Mercedes-Benz chassis, but other base vehicles followed, including VWs, Talbots, Peugeots, Fords and Fiats, although the company has tended to focus on the luxury end of the coachbuilt motorhome market.

Today, the company has an extensive range of Fiat-based campervans as well as building van conversions for the UK ranges of other Trigano Group brands: Benimar, Chausson and Roller Team. The company’s campervan portfolio starts with the budget Expedition range and includes the pop-top Adventure, while the well-established V-Line comes in S, SE and Sport versions.

Layout:

Fixed bed

Travel seats:

Berths:

Length:

Gross weight:

Payload:

510kg

Introduced last year, the Expedition campervan range made significant waves, offering a campervan with all the essentials at an affordable price. Now, a third model joins the line-up. At 6.36m (on the Fiat extra-long van), this is the biggest Expedition campervan and it can be ordered with a pop-top fitted to make it a full four-berth.

The main bed, however, is at the back running across the width. There is a slatted base and a clever fabric screen that protects the bed area when the back doors are open. As well as the bed, it’s also what is underneath that counts. There’s a large storage space with an optional slide-out rack for bikes, meaning your two-wheeled transport can be securely and safely carried.

Further forward, the kitchen is opposite the washroom. The chef’s area includes a two-burner hob and sink combo as well as an oven/grill below. The fridge runs off 12V and cutlery storage can be found in a drawer within the main unit.

Opposite, the washroom is compact, but offers a fixed corner basin instead of the tip-up style found in other Expedition campers. Externally, the Expedition Grey comes as standard, but you can also order white, metallic black and three other shades of grey. A solar panel is fitted as standard, too, while a Whale heater and hot water boiler are fitted underneath the campervan to maximise storage and living space inside.

Enhance your Expedition with bigger engines (160bhp or 180bhp) as well as Fiat’s nine-speed automatic gearbox, plus you can order alloy wheels, that pop-top roof with bed, an additional leisure battery, a double-DIN cab radio with Apple CarPlay, pleated blinds for the windscreen and/or side cab windows and the aforementioned slide-out bike storage trays for the garage.

There is also a Media Pack, which provides a 21.5in TV, reversing camera, steering wheel controls for the radio, a TV aerial and a Zenec multimedia unit for the cab with motorhome sat-nav, digital radio, Bluetooth hands-free system with microphone and a rear view camera (can show a rear view when driving forwards).

Layout:

Length:

6.36m

Gross weight:

3,500kg

Payload:

365kg

This is the longest of the two Adventure models, both of which have a rising roof fitted as standard, making them a relatively compact family campervan. This 6.36m-long Fiat Ducato has rear lounge sofas that allow for a wider double bed.

Simply pull the seat bases together and drop in the backrest cushions. It’s an impressive 1.86m by 1.63m, while the pop-top bed offers a 2m-long by 1.30m-wide sleeping space.

The front lounge then only has to offer seating and dining space and so travel and lounging comfort is not compromised by the need to make a bed up. Also in this range you will find the Cab-Plus feature, doing away with the Fiat overcab shelf, in favour of more headroom. Kitchens are fitted with a two-burner hob and sink, as well as a three-way fridge/freezer.

The washroom has a cassette toilet with electric flush and a space-saving fold-away sink. Diamond-cut 16in alloy wheels, awning and the Media Pack are fitted as standard, while there is a choice of six exterior colours, too.

Layout:

Rear lounge

Berths:

Length:

5.99m

Gross weight:

3,500kg

Payload:

One of Auto-Trail’s original models when it re-entered the campervan market a few years ago, this is a purely-for-two layout with its rear lounge. It’s a smidge under 6m long, yet has a large relaxing area at the rear, making into a spacious double at night.

Kitchens include a cooker offering three gas burners, oven and grill and there’s a 800W mains-powered microwave as standard.

The washroom is opposite this, offering a multifunctional space thanks to the recessed drop-down basin with storage above.

This year, there is more headroom in the cab, thanks to Auto-Trail’s Cab-Plus feature, while the Media Pack is fitted as standard. This includes a 21.5in TV, motorhome-specific sat-nav in the touchscreen multimedia unit and a colour reversing camera. You can upgrade the engine to 160bhp or 180bhp and opt for an automatic gearbox, while Panoview adds a panoramic rooflight above the cab. You can also specify a WiFi system.

Highlights of Auto-Trail 2022 campervans

  • Media Pack fitted as standard to V-Line SE, V-Line Sport and Adventure models. This includes a touchscreen unit in the cab with motorhome-specific sat-nav, DAB, Bluetooth hands-free and the rear view camera, as well as a TV aerial and 21.5in Avtex widescreen smart TV.

  • Expedition now includes three models, the new fixed bed 68 joining the two-berth 66 and 67, both of which have rear lounges, but the latter also has a front dinette. All models can be ordered with alloy wheels, cab blinds, a double-DIN radio with Apple CarPlay and an additional leisure battery, all of which are offered as factory-fitted options.

  • V-Line S gets a new Moyet Oak interior furnishing scheme and can be specified with Cab-Plus and Panoview in the cab.

  • V-Line Sport gets an external shower point as standard, gas BBQ point in the boot and a U-shaped lounge at the rear.
