The Woolacombe Bay Holiday Parks are situated on Devon’s Golden Coast just minutes away from 3 miles of sandy Blue Flag beaches and surrounded by spectacular National Trust countryside. Set on a hill overlooking Woolacombe Bay, the award winning parks have spectacular sea and countryside views.

Part of a group of four sites, Woolacombe Bay offers something for everyone and is set in an elevated position overlooking a sandy beach with level pitches. The tranquil tree-lined site is for tents only and enjoys stunning views over Woolacombe Bay and beyond. There are 170 camping pitches in total; 100 with free electric hook-ups and 70 without. On-site facilities are extensive and include heated indoor and outdoor pools (the latter with a great view of the coast), as well as water slides, a children's play park, amusement arcade and tennis courts. For adult pampering these is also a sauna, steam room and spa. There's also a bar, restaurant, café and nightly cabaret to enjoy. The site is within walking distance of the beach making it very appealing for families.

We have a lot of different requirements for our camping sites. Some of us are looking for lively sites with entertainment in the evening, others are looking for child-friendly sites where the kids can have a good time. The sporty need a site with good tennis courts or a golf course nearby or excellent walks to occupy them. The traditional need a good beach and a constant supply of ice cream. There is no way that one campsite can meet everyone’s needs, so it was a delight to visit Woolacombe Bay Holiday Parks in North Devon to see a group of sites that cater for a wide range of needs. Dogs are welcome at all four parks which offer easy access to footpaths and exercise areas.

Woolacombe Bay Holiday Parks consists of four holiday parks near the villages of Woolacombe and Mortehoe overlooking the golden sands of Woolacombe Bay. Each of the parks is different, ranging from the lively Golden Coast Holiday Village and Woolacombe Bay Holiday Village, to the quieter Twitchen House Park and the restful Easewell Farm Holiday Park and Golf Club. Anyone staying at one of the parks can use the facilities of any of the others. There is even a double decker bus service that links the parks and joins them to the golden sands at Woolacombe Bay.

Woolacombe is near the northern tip of Devon overlooking the Atlantic Ocean and Lundy Island. It is well located for exploring North Devon and getting as far as north Cornwall and Exmoor by car. Buses run past the site gates giving regular services to the towns of Ilfracombe and Barnstaple.

Ilfracombe is a well-preserved Victorian seaside resort in a dramatic setting based around the pretty harbour. The town is full of shops and includes a fascinating museum. For a seaside resort it does not have large beaches on the predominantly rocky coast. As a result, tunnels have been bored through the cliff to reach a couple of small private beaches. These are now open to the public and give a fascinating insight into Victorian sea bathing. The harbour is the departure point for the day trips to Lundy Island, seventeen miles offshore.

Barnstaple is an old market town still with thriving markets that are well worth a visit along with modern supermarkets for supplies. It is a busy town that can get clogged up with traffic and is well worth avoiding on the signposted diversion when arriving or departing the holiday parks. The fascinating olde-worlde towns and villages of Bideford, Appledore, Clovelly, Lynton and Exmoor are all within easy reach of the campsites.

The whole area is bounded by the dramatic Atlantic coast. The coastal path gives tremendous and invigorating walking with constantly changing views. Every now and then there are small coves with sandy beaches that contrast with the long sweep and the golden sands at Woolacombe Bay itself.

For those wanting to stay on the campsites, then the range of attractions is equally enjoyable. The parks have bars, shops, restaurants and takeaways, launderettes and amusement arcades with a full range of entertainment provided. Bars and restaurants range from ‘The Old Mill’, a traditional pub set in a 17th century with extensive sea views to fast food outlets serving burgers and chips. Those looking for entertainment have a wide choice with entertainers available at weekends, every night in high summer. There is a children’s club that can take the children off your hands for a relaxing hour or two. There is a cinema at the Golden Coast Holiday Village.

Sportsmen have an embarrassment of riches. The golf course at the Easewell Park is of professional standard, 4729 yards, par six (9 hole 18 tee), and has a well-stocked golf shop. There are two full size indoor bowls rinks, eight lanes of ten-pin bowling, outdoor short mat bowls, pitch and putt, crazy golf, tennis and snooker available on the sites and a new surf school where you can have lessons or buy or hire surf equipment. There are also well stocked fishing lakes at two of the campsites.

Walkers are spoilt for choice with long inland trails as well as the exciting coastal footpath. Those with dogs can stay on three of the parks. Away from the parks' outings can be arranged for horse riding, kayaking, quad biking, clay pigeon shooting and that most satisfying of sports: shopping.

But of all the sports it is swimming that is best served. Woolacombe Bay Holiday Village and Twitchen House Holiday Village have both an indoor and outdoor pool whilst Easewell Farm Holiday Village has an indoor pool. There are also two fun pools where water, slides and fountains combine for fun-packed sessions for children. The pools do not have full time life-guards so parents must keep an eye on their children and access to the pools in controlled by tokens that are only given out to adults. The parks operate a range of swimming courses for beginners and can offer individual tuition. There are also spa baths and saunas for a touch of luxury.

Those wanting pampering can make use of the Club Romano Spa which offers a steam room, dry sauna, plunge pool and spa bath. Qualified staff can give massages, facials, waxing, manicures and pedicures. The Waves Ceramic studio offers an alternative way to relax - painting your own pottery.

The campsites cater for a wide range of visitors. All of the sites offer extensive grounds for tents, motorhomes and touring caravans (with the exception of the Woolacombe Bay Holiday Village which does not take touring caravans). Each site has its own reception open from 8am to midnight.

All have good amenity facilities, with showers, laundry and washing-up areas. A new amenity block has been built on one of the camping sites that sets new standards in comfort and includes saunas. The camp fields offer grass and hard-standing with electric hook-ups. One thing that’s consistent on all the sites is the glorious views of the Devon countryside and the open sea.

This part of Devon makes for a perfect holiday destination. There are few places better for spending a holiday week and Woolacombe Bay Holiday Parks offer something for everyone, however demanding they may be.
