The Old Oaks Touring Park

FROM the moment you drive into the Old Oaks Touring Park, the tone is set for a great holiday. The neat driveway leads to a stone built reception area alongside a traditional red phone box.

Inside you'll find a well equipped reception and shop area that offers everything from camping equipment to a wide variety of food that includes everything from canned and dry goods to ice cream, Old Oaks' own fresh eggs and freshly-baked cakes. It's also licenced and we'd recommend you sample the various Glastonbury Ales they sell - these are all excellent.

Once you've checked in and found your way to your pitch you'll enjoy delightful panoramic views of the Mendip Hills, with the pitches being arranged in small groups on either terraced levels or around grassed areas. Walnut Paddock Circle has large hardstandings and several full service pitches, around a large grass circle cantered by mature shrubs. This area is particular popular with groups of friends, so book well in advance to bag a pitch here.

The entire site is sloping but all ninety-seven pitches are level, with many divided by hedges or flowering shrubs, into private bays. A mix of grass and gravel hardstanding, The Old Oaks has 88 hardstanding pitches, half of which are fully serviced, nine grass pitches and six unique Camping Cabins.

You can enjoy walks directly off the site and, as they accept dogs, you can share it with your furry friend, too. They have designated dog-walking areas and dog shower on site, plus doggy litter bins and handwash stations.

All these pitches are set against Glastonbury Tor, which frames the backdrop. At 520ft tall it's quite a challenge to climb, but the epic views are said to make it well worth all the exertion!

It's worth noting that the site also hires out bicycles (priced at under £9 for a full day's hire when we visited) and they can provide details of a circular route that covers the Avalon Marshes, the Somerset nature reserves and peat moors. Thoughtfully, this route is mainly flat and takes in a little cafe on the way.

Next to the well-stocked shop you'll find a spacious indoor area that houses a pool table and plenty of tourist leaflets to inspire you to explore the surrounding area and attractions. There's also a book exchange library to be found here, too.

Up from the reception and shop area are terraces with hardstandings; suitable for tents or camper vans and the other side of the footpath to Glastonbury and the Tor is the Orchard, which still retains a few cider apple trees. Here there is a mix of tiered hardstanding, fully-serviced and grass pitches, along with three Camping Cabins. A network of scenic footpaths surrounds the site, while the cyclist has quiet country lanes to explore. Gog and Magog, ancient oaks are nearby.

The fisherman has a large pond to fish that has 12 platforms suitable for the disabled. The fully tiled, heated amenity block has large showers and washing cubicles, disabled facilities, a bathroom and two additional unisex showers and toilets. There is a well-equipped laundry, washing up sinks and a freezer facility. A second state-of-the-art amenities block will be completed by late Spring 2012, which will incorporate the use of renewable energy sources - very much in keeping with their green ethos.

The park encourages visitors to recycle where possible, with several recycling points. Fresh water points are situated near to all pitches, this site is well landscaped, clean and neat - one of the best we’ve visited.

It is little wonder then that this five-star site won the coveted AA South West Campsite of the Year award. It also holds 11 David Bellamy Gold awards for its environmental achievements, as well as being a member of the Tranquil Touring park group and the Best of British group.
