1 Exe Valley Caravan Site, Somerset
Mill House, Bridgetown, Dulverton TA22 9JRTel: 01643-851432 Web: www.exevalleycamping.co.uk Open: 15 March - 21 October
Exe Valley is a peaceful, idyllic campsite surrounded by trees and bordered by the River Exe, within the Exmoor National Park. A rural retreat, the pitches here are located by the river, or the mill stream, which also runs through the grounds. In the local area you will find sleepy villages, historic properties and miles of moorland to explore. Pitches are available on grass or hardstanding and there’s a newly upgraded toilet block along with shower facilities. A local inn serving food at lunchtimes and in the evening is just across the road from the site and you can walk directly along the river to the weir to watch the salmon leap in season. The National Park provides those with a love of the outdoors numerous walking and cycling routes and wildlife galore.
2 Apple Acres Caravan & Camping Site, Kent
Mabledon Farm, London Road, Southborough, Tunbridge Wells, Kent TN4 0UQTel: 01732-352080 Web: www.appleacres.co.uk Open: 1 March - 15 January
As the name suggests, Apple Acres is set in four acres of apple and plum orchards. It has just ten hardstanding pitches.
There’s acres of land to walk dogs and a pub serving real ales and good food is just a 20-minute walk away. Shops are available a short drive away or a handy bus service is only five minutes’ walk. The campsite has toilets and showers and the neighbouring land is host to car boot sales on occasional Sundays in summer. Tonbridge, with its thirteenth century castle and river cruises, is 1½ miles north and to the west is Penshurst Place and Gardens. Tonbridge railway station is 10 minutes from the site.
3 Gelderwood Country Caravan Park, Lancashire
Ashworth Road, Rochdale OL11 5UPTel: 01706-364858 Web: www.gelderwoodcaravanpark.co.uk Open: All year
A rural feel and a countryside setting, yet only three miles from the motorway and within striking distance of the great metropolis of Manchester, Gelderwood Country Caravan Park offers five-star facilities and all-weather pitches. Open all year, the site offers award-winning heated showers and has a David Bellamy 10 year Gold Award for Conservation. The campsite is set in 15 acres of mature woodland and there are a handful of dedicated motorhome pitches. The rural hamlet of Ashworth is just a quarter of a mile away, and there are several restaurants within walking distance of the site.
4 Wayfarers Caravan Park, Cornwall
St Hilary, Penzance TR20 9EFTel: 01736-763326 Web: www.wayfarerspark.co.uk Open: 4 May - 28 September
As a perfect location to kick off the high-pressure outside world, the ‘low-density’ Wayfarers campsite has much to commend it. The owners say they have managed the neat trick of delivering peace even during high season by virtue of the spacious layout, which makes clever use of the site’s perimeter and traditional Cornish hedgerows. The park is within two miles of Mounts Bay, with its fairytale castle rising from the waters and, as you would expect with Cornwall, some spectacular beaches and hidden coves are within easy reach. The campsite’s marked pitches are spacious, level and well-drained. Hardstandings and 16A hook-ups are available, and fresh water and chemical disposal points are on hand.
5 Plough Lane Caravan Site, Wiltshire
Plough Lane, Kington Langley, Chippenham, Wiltshire, SN15 5PSTel: 01249 750146 Web: www.ploughlane.co.uk Open: 11 March - 4 November
This select, family-run site near Chippenham is just two miles from the M4 and well placed for exploring Wiltshire, the Cotswolds, Bath, Bristol and south Wales. The site owners say their intention is to offer guests somewhere to relax away from the noise of children, in well-maintained surroundings. There are 50 level pitches, each being half hardstanding and half grass with electric hook-up, and 25 of these are serviced pitches. Dogs are welcome at this popular site, which has well thought-out access. Booking is essential.
6 Somers Wood, Warwickshire
Somers Road, Meriden, Warwickshire CV7 7PLTel: 01676-522978 Web: www.somerswood.co.uk Open: All year
For anything taking place at the NEC, this campsite is the perfect spot as it is the closest site to the exhibition centre. Advanced booking is essential when there is an event on, but this site is also a peaceful retreat at any time of the year.
Set in woodland, Somers Wood is one mile from Meriden village, which offers a range of shops and a restaurant, and adjacent to the campsite is Stonebridge Golf Centre with its 18-hole course, clubhouse and restaurant. There are 48 pitches at Somers Wood with four of them fully serviced. Noted places to visit include the historic town of Warwick with its famous medieval castle.
7 Two Mills Touring Park, Norfolk
Yarmouth Road, North Walsham, Norfolk NR28 9NATel: 01692-405829 Web: www.twomills.co.uk Open: 1 March – 22 December
Located between the Norfolk Broads and the Norfolk coast, this winner of an AA Campsite of the Year award in 2012 clearly sets high standards for itself. The site offers 81 all-weather pitches over eight acres, including extra-large ‘de-luxe panoramic’ pitches, which include a small paved area strategically positioned for the best views. A nearby restaurant (150m) and the shops of North Walsham (one mile) add motorhome convenience to this site. Within easy reach are the varied delights of Cromer (with its golden sands, pier and crab fishing), the Norfolk Broads with their almost limitless potential for boat-based fun and Norwich – one of the best-preserved medieval cities in the UK.

Benwick Road, Doddington, Cambs PE15 0TYTel: 01354-740199 Web: www.fieldsendfishing.co.uk Open: All year
Ideal for the avid fisherman, Fields End Water offers 38 fully serviced pitches and 14 electric pitches arranged on two tiers. There are two fishing lakes on site known as The Pit and The Pool, which, as well as being great for fishermen, are a lovely spot to enjoy a picnic or evening stroll. The area around the site consists of a five-acre wood, where dogs can be exercised, and miles of footpaths leading out into the wilderness of the fens. Buses are available from the site to make visiting Cambridge and the cathedral cities of Ely and Peterborough easy.
9 Widdicombe Farm, Devon
The Ring Road, Marldon, Devon TQ3 1STTel: 01803-558325 Web: www.widdicombefarm.co.uk Open: 16 March - 27 October
Widdicombe Farm is a large site with over 200 touring pitches and first-rate facilities. It offers four grades of pitch and is easy to find. Unusually for a county often remembered for its fiddly little lanes, it has wide and easy access directly off the A380 Torquay-Paignton ring road. The reception area includes a shop, and the Poppies restaurant and takeaway. Just over the way is the Hayloft Bar, serving a range of draught and bottled beers and ciders and hosting evening events. The nearby area is something of a tourist mecca – the English Riviera of Torquay, Paignton and Brixham claiming more attractions than any other resort in the UK.
10 Overbrook Caravan Park, North Yorkshire
Maltongate, Thornton-le-Dale, Pickering, YO18 7SETel: 01751-474417 Web: www.overbrookcaravanpark.co.uk Open: 1 March - 7 January
Built on the site of a disused railway station, this site is in a picturesque location in the stunning North Yorkshire Moors National Park. An easy half-mile-walk away, the village of Thornton-le-Dale is well worth exploring. Here are traditional shops and pubs, an ancient market cross and a well-known and much-photographed thatched cottage, which you’ll recognise from a chocolate box. The site has 50 pitches among its flowering borders and shrubs, and all hardstanding pitches have electric hook-ups. The immaculate heated toilet block includes a female privacy cubicle and free showers, and nearby are coin-operated laundry and drying facilities. Free WiFi is provided on site. Bus services link the village to York, the market town of Helmsley and the seaside resorts of Whitby and Scarborough.
