Readers favourite campsites

f652101e-2ae9-4e59-8674-cdca814403b0

Recently we asked MMM readers on the Motorhome Matters forum to nominate their favourite campsites. Is it the location or the facilities? The wardens or the attractions nearby? We wanted people to name their favourite campsite and to tell us why - to them - the campsite is perfect and stands out above the rest.

Natterer See, Austria

Natterer See 1, A-6161 Natters/Tirol, Austria
Tel: 0043-512-546732  Web: natterersee.com  Open: All year

Cliffy reckons that Natterer See near Innsbruck is “without a doubt the best site we have been to”. High praise indeed! This campsite “gives the feeling of being in the mountains while being close to Innsbruck, with a free bus there every hour”.

Brighthams Farm, West Sussex

Bines Road, Partridge Green, Nr Henfield, Horsham West Sussex RH13 8EQ
Tel: 01403-711965  Web: campingandcaravanningclub.co.uk  Open: 1 March – 31 October

This site is favoured by Tea Cup. This Camping and Caravanning Club (CS) has great views of the South Downs.

Nicholaston Farm, Swansea

Penmaen, Gower, Swansea, Wales SA3 2HL
Tel: 01792-371209  Web: nicholastonfarm.co.uk  Open: 1 April – 28 September

Symbol Owner offered a selection of sites where dogs are banned – which are “too few and far between”. Nevertheless the dog-tolerant Nicholaston Farm on the Gower coast is, in his opinion, “the best site that we visited last year”.

Naburn LockNaburn Lock, North Yorkshire

Naburn, York YO19 4RU
Tel: 01904-728697  Web: naburnlock.co.uk
Open: 1 March – 5 November

Cliffy tells us that his favourite UK campsite is Naburn Lock, with a lockside setting and a safe cycle track into York. This is “beautiful, clean and tidy, with a well-stocked site shop and a great pub a short walk away”.

Kinloch Campsite, Isle of Skye

Millburn, Isle of Skye IV55 8GU
Tel: 01470-521210  Web: kinloch-campsite.co.uk  Open: 1 April – 31 October

In Scotland, the Kinloch campsite on the Isle of Skye is in a “beautiful location on the water’s edge and very friendly,” according to Docted.

Caolasnacon Caravan and Camping, Highland

Caolasnacon, Kinlochleven, Highland PH50 4RJ
Tel: 01855-831279  Web: kinlochlevencaravans.com  Open: All year

Caolasnacon Caravan and Camping at Kinlochleven near Glencoe wins praise from Charabanc for being “beautiful, close to mountains, with seals passing by and fires on the beach”. Facilities are only “functional”, though.

Mannix PointPremier ParksMannix Point, Co Kerry

Cahirciveen, Ring of Kerry Coast, Ireland
Tel: 00353-669-472806  Web: campinginkerry.com
Open: 15 March – 15 October

Mannix Point campsite in Kerry, Ireland, won rave reviews. Charabanc speaks of the “warm welcome, peat fire and singing in the bothy, and the stunning location” of this Premier Park. The view is endorsed by Symbol Owner, who describes the place as “brilliant” and speaks warmly of the “wonderful Irish eccentric owner, Mortimer”.

Camping Sainte Claire, France

19 Rue la Grande Flandre, 76270 Neufchatel-en-Bray, France
Tel: 0033-235-930393  Web: camping-sainte-claire.com  Open: 1 April – 24 October

Camping Sainte Claire at Neufchatel en Bray is a popular suggestion. Corky 8 described it as “a lovely well-kept site for motorhomes, with a supermarket, Aldi and Lidl all within walking distance”. This view is endorsed both by Flicka, “our favourite French site, and not forgetting their on-site bar/restaurant” and by Derek Pringle.

Camping Fornella, Italy

San Felice del Benaco, Lago di Garda, Italy
Tel: 0039-036-562294  Web: fornella.it  Open: 24 April – 28 September

JudgeMental’ is unequivocal in praise for Camping Fornella situated next to Lake Garda in Italy.
“The best site we have ever stayed on. We go every year – this will be our tenth. Returning is like going home.”

Camping Municipal du Mas, France

Avenue du Docteur Bienfait, 63500 Issoire, France
Tel: 0033-473-890359  Web: camping-issoire.com  Open: 1 April – 6 November

The municipal campsites favoured well amongst our readers with Brian BW nominating the Camping Municipal du Mas at Issoire, south of Clemont Ferrand in France. He says it “has all the facilities of a four-star site and new motorhome drainage and top-up facilities. Close to the town and on the A75 (free) motorway to the south of France”.

Kendal Club siteKendal Caravan Club Site, Cumbria

Sedgewick, Kendal, Cumbria LA8 0JZ
Tel: 01539-560186  Web: caravanclub.co.uk  Open: 21 March – 3 November

Kendal Caravan Club site is, says Poppy, “very pretty, with lovely walks and a dog-friendly pub”.
Another Club site, at Uttoxeter Racecourse, is handy for both town and train, says Docted, and is also “brilliant for dog owners”.

Camping Municipal le Vallon de l’Ehn, France

1 Rue de Berlin, 67210 Obernai, France
Tel: 0033-388-953848  Web: tourisme-obernai.fr  Open: 14 March – 12 January

Another municipal site, Camping Municipal le Vallon de l’Ehn at Obernai in Alsace, France, is singled out for praise by Brian Kirby. “Superbly maintained, well run, with a separate area for motorhomes. Generous pitches, close to train and supermarkets, and reasonable cost.”

Camping Serenissima, Italy

Via Padana 334/A, 30176 Malcontenta (VE), Italy
Tel: 0039-041-921850  Web: campingserenissima.it  Open: 14 April – 5 November

Camping Serenissima at Oriago, Italy, is another of Brian Kirby’s favourite campsites. This is “well maintained, with a motorhome service point and generous grass pitches, but tends to get busy, especially in season”. This may be because it is “cheap for anywhere within spitting distance of Venice.”

Sportcamp Woferlgut, Austria

Kroessenbach 40, A-5671 Bruck an der Glocknerstrabe
Tel: 0043-654-573030  Web: sportcamp.at  Open: All year

Another Austrian site is singled out for praise by Poppy. Sportcamp Woferlgut is “fabulous and super clean, with a village within walking distance, beautiful scenery, and a nearby railway station that runs to Salzburg”.
