Holiday home review: Mulberry Magic

5d5f69a8-f369-41ec-a137-c5072755db4f

Willerby has launched into the super-luxury holiday homes market with the Mulberry, a spacious unit with a country-modern theme.

There’s a touch of magic about the name Mulberry. It’s a classic fashion statement; a tree imported into Britain by the Romans and whose leaves were used to fatten silkworms for the Oriental silk trade – and the National Collection of Mulberries celebrates its royal connections with the tree planted in the gardens of Buckingham Palace.

Mulberry has long associations with luxury and heritage. It’s a fitting name, therefore, for Willerby’s new venture into the luxury holiday home market with a home of classic country style and sophistication.

Willerby, best known for traditional holiday home construction and style, unveiled the Mulberry, the first lodge in the company’s new premium Botanical Collection, in January. The first Mulberry units purchased will be ready to be sited on parks as early as May.

The venture takes Willerby into a new construction system; more robust, with increased thermal and acoustic qualities, thicker walls and a stronger, galvanised chassis.

And the top luxury Mulberry holiday home has an enticing option; it comes complete with connections for a hot tub which you can opt for to place on the decking at the front of the unit.

Construction

The Mulberry is primarily a holiday home. The company constructs them to full residential standard (BS 3632 (2015). The new building system is trademarked Willerby Thermowise, and involves high-grade flooring, wall and roof construction, combining to create enhanced thermal and acoustic efficiency. The idea is that you can be warm and toasty and not hear your neighbours! The thermal efficiency also lowers running costs.

Willerby makes the flooring from Structural Insulated Panels (SIPS), constructed by sandwiching a core of rigid foam plastic in between two facings.

The walls are 15mm thick. The company fixes the exterior wall cladding to treated timber, with an air-flow gap, and a membrane which covers the 11m-thick boarding, forming a rigid structure. Willerby covers the interior walls with a high-performance fibreboard which enhances acoustic, moisture and load-hanging efficiency.

The roof is steel coated pantile roofing sheets fixed to timber battens fastened to trusses separated by a breathable membrane. The layer protects the roof from moisture retention ad also lets any moisture from within the structure escape.

Hot tub ready!

The Mulberry is ready for a hot tub installation on the decking. The Mulberry’s central heating system has pipework ready-installed to enable a hot tub to be filled from the home’s central heating hot water system, so when you arrive at your holiday home, you can get your hot tub ready for use much faster than only using its water heating system.

Layout and style

The Mulberry has two bedrooms, a full-width lounge, a central kitchen with dining area, a coat cabinet by the door and a porch. The unit is 14m long and 7.7m wide.

The style is called “country modern”, with all freestanding furniture, inspired by Shaker-style and with feature half-moon-shaped metal handles.

You can choose your Mulberry in one of three colourways at no extra cost – “Buttercup" (that's the one pictured here), "Heather" (with purple accent shades) or "Cornflower" (with blue tones).

Lounge

Mulberry loounge

The Mulberry’s lounge spans the full width of the home and has windows on three aspects, so wherever the view lies you can enjoy it. Sliding patio doors lead out to your decking.

A feature fireplace has a traditional electric log burner-style stove.

Lights are set into the ceiling, along with speakers for the Bluetooth system that enables you to play music straight from your phone.

Architectural-style steel bolts are a feature of the central wooden beam that runs down the whole length of the lounge and kitchen.

The lounge has a large sofa and chair in grey, plus an armchair for two and a footstool upholstered in buttercup yellow.

Shaker-style cabinets, a nest of small tables and a large central coffee table come in a 'cashmere' shade. The curtains use the buttercup shade in a tartan-inspired pattern with cream and pale fawn.

The deep windowsill on one side of the front area could be used for seating when the sun streams through the windows (cushions placed here would be lovely) or simply for ornaments.

The Mulberry comes with all of the artworks that you see on the walls in these pictures, plus the giant Roman-numeral clock over the fireplace and the tripod-style lamp.

Kitchen-dining room

Mulberry kitchen

Two large roof windows over the kitchen ensure this area is exceptionally light and airy.

The island unit accommodates a horizontal fridge-freezer and cabinets and creates a breakfast bar with two tall chairs at one end.

Integrated appliances are a washer-drier, dishwasher and microwave. There’s a lot of both upper and lower storage space, plus a large larder-style cabinet containing a multitude of shelving plus pull-put basket-style drawers.

Ceramic tiles add to the style as well as practicality, and two large pendant lights over the island look amazing, with glass shades with clear bulbs displaying vintage squirrel-cage filaments.

A four-seater table with upholstered wooden chairs sits alongside the kitchen.

A hall cupboard with coat hooks and lots of space for shoes is alongside the door; it would be easy to keep a Mulberry tidy!

Bedrooms

The easy-to-keep-tidy attribute continues in both bedrooms, with large free-standing wardrobes and chests of drawers. In the master bedroom, there are 16 drawers!

The master bedroom comes complete with a montage of eight photo frames above the bed. Wallpaper has a botanical theme, adhering to Willerby’s name for the new holiday home collection. Furnishings include a dressing table with upholstered chair.

The en-suite to the master bedroom features a large ladder radiator, a mirror with built-in light surround and grey tongue-and-groove wood-cladding

The second bedroom has twin three-foot-wide beds; you can opt for a double bed as an alternative. The wardrobe is identical to the one in the main bedroom, with drawers under the hanging space. Five more drawers in a cabinet give this room generous overall storage capacity.

This room also features botanical-theme wallpaper on one wall.
