Enchanted nights offered in holiday park’s fantasy home

An unusual new glamping pod at a Herefordshire holiday park is casting a spell on JRR Tolkien fans – despite offering duvets and digital TV in place of dragons and dwarves.

The Lord of the Rings-style pod on Townsend Holiday Park near Leominster has attracted bookings from both Hobbit buffs and romantically-minded holidaymakers.

Built beneath a grass-covered mound, the five-berth dwelling may look like a magical medieval retreat or even a Teletubby house. But its facilities are firmly rooted in modern times.

It boasts a fully equipped kitchen, heating, television, bathroom and a host of other mod-cons.

The pod's cosy atmosphere is enhanced by its many hand-crafted timber features and stone flag flooring, and outside there's a covered patio area with a barbecue and garden furniture.

Inspiration for this new take on glamping came from the park's owners, Geoff and Su Smith, who already offer more conventional pod accommodation at Townsend.

At the heart of the 12-acre park is a fishing lake which helps draw a wide range of bird species and other wildlife to the area.

There is also a mountain bike trail and a pump track laid out in the park's woodland, plus a children's play area.

Such has been the success of the pod – which is built off-site to a modular and scalable design – that two more units are now in production for installation early next year.

Short breaks in the pod start at £89 per family or couple per night.
