The new Grantham Caravans dealer special Swift Siena has over £1000-worth of extra equipment for only £100 more than the price of the standard Sprite Major 4 FB on which it’s based.

Full review

A few months ago Grantham Caravans carried out a survey, asking what customers considered important when choosing a new caravan. The survey showed that the three main considerations are comfort, security and exclusivity. The Grantham team used the results to plan the choice of equipment which they added to a standard caravan to create a special edition. The result? The Swift Siena.

Grantham Caravans based the Siena on the Sprite range, gave it the name of an enchanting city in Tuscany, gave it the angular rich red and grey livery of the Swift Challenger Sport range, and additional equipment worth £1102.
There are four models in the Siena range; the two-berth Siena 2, with an end washroom, the six-berth 6 TD, with bunk beds in a rear family area, the 4 SB, with a transverse island bed, and the 4 FB which we chose as an example of the range.

And the price? The Siena 4 FB reviewed here costs £16,350. The Sprite Major 4 FB on which it’s based costs £16,250 when you add on the Diamond Pack and sunroof with which all Sprites are equipped, plus the normal dealer delivery charge. For the extra £100 the Siena is a Sprite transformed, in terms of both character and equipment level.

We analysed the Siena following the three pointers that resulted from Grantham Caravans’ survey.

In addition to the standard Tracker system, Sienas come with three security devices. They have a key fob-operated alarm system; that accounts for £260 of the extras total. They come with an AL-KO Secure wheel lock (£255) plus a Milenco hitch lock (£69).

Items that enhance the exclusivity appeal include a barbecue point (that accounts for £131 of the extras total), external locker access and an exterior mains socket (that’s £93.60).

Exclusivity and comfort merge in the upholstery upgrade that accounts of £195 of the transformation. It gives Sienas the same fabric scheme as the Swift Challenger range, with the extra comfort of the brilliantly-designed two-section wedge-shaped armrests. Sienas have two extra cushions, with the name Siena embroidered across a corner. The two fixed-bed models have Siena-embroidered bed runners.

And there’s more exclusivity and comfort rolled into one. Sienas come with a set of three high quality towels with the word Siena embroidered into the hem. If you want to take the Siena identity a step further you can purchase a long white bathrobe with the name embroidered onto it, for an extra £40.

It’s easy to imagine wrapping up in the Siena-labelled bathrobe sitting on the 4 FB’s double bed drinking a big mug of coffee. The largest of the three towels would be hanging on the big chrome loop on the forward wall of the shower room. The two smaller towels would be on hooks, one above the loop, the other alongside the mirror in an alcove beside the bed. The mirror, too, adds to the Siena exclusivity package; the name is subtly etched into the glass. Wherever you look in this caravan the name Siena is in your sightline to drift your thoughts into realms of sunny holidays amid the stunning scenery and historic fascination of Italy’s Tuscany region. The bright sea-and-sand turquoise colour in the curtains and cushions plays a significant part in painting the holiday picture, too.

Our verdict

Sprite, for generations an icon of caravan value, has, with the arrival of the special edition Siena, a strong rival. Siena is an amazing package of value. Even if you go for the extra exclusivity of the £40 bathrobe you’d be spending only £140 more than the cost of the equivalent Sprite. The additional equipment package places Sienas well up into the mid-range echelon. And the embroidered cushions and towels are touches that enhance the comfort character of these exclusive models.
