Siena, the new name in caravans for 2015, is a special edition of the Sprite range, made to the specification of Grantham Caravans. The SB is the range's transverse island-bed model. Sienas have more than £1000-worth of additional equipment compared with standard Sprites.

Full review

In the six months since the launch of the exclusive Siena range, Grantham Caravans has seen high volumes of sales; buyers, it seems, love the high spec and individual character of the range that’s named after an enchanting city in Tuscany.

Demand has now prompted Grantham Caravans to introduce a fifth model in the range. The compact fixed-bed Siena 4 now joins the two-berth Siena 2, the end-washroom, fixed-bed 4 FB, the transverse-bed 4 SB and the six-berth 6 TD.
The new Siena 4, shorter and lighter than the two other fixed-bed Sienas, will be on sale at Grantham Caravans at the end of February.

To date, the island-bed Siena 4 SB has proved to be the most popular layout; that’s why we chose this model for this  review…

In its standard form, the new-for-2015 transverse island-bed Sprite Major 4 SB, on which the Siena 4 SB is based, has solid appeal, with a great-value price and a modest weight which puts it within tow scope of a wide variety of vehicles.

The Siena version has more than £1000-worth of additional equipment, and an appearance that gives it an identity of its own.

Its layout gives you a full-width rear shower room, a cosy bedroom with a corner dressing table equipped with television connections, and a kitchen with enough space to make meals for two. A hinged extension augments kitchen surface quantity; we think most buyers will keep it in place most of the time, because it doesn’t take up very much of the offside settee length.

Many months of research, including questionnaires into what buyers want in a dealer special caravan, followed by careful planning by the Grantham Caravans team, went into the creation of the Siena range. The research revealed that purchasers envisaged added value in three specific categories: security, comfort and exclusivity.

To enhance comfort and cosiness, Sienas have two extra cushions, with the name Siena embroidered across a corner. The fixed-bed models have Siena-embroidered bed runners. Exclusivity and comfort are rolled into one with a set of three high quality towels with the word Siena embroidered into the hem. If you want to take the Siena identity a step further you can purchase a long white bathrobe with the name embroidered onto it, for an extra £40.

The exclusivity appeal of Sienas is increased by items including a barbecue point (that accounts for £131 of the extra-value total), external locker access and an exterior mains socket (that’s £93.60).

Enhanced security comes in the form of three security devices in addition to the standard Tracker system. They have a key fob-operated alarm system; that accounts for £260 of the extras total. They come with an AL-KO Secure wheel lock (worth £255) plus a Milenco hitch lock (£69).

The Siena 4 SB costs £15,995. The Sprite Major 4 SB on which it’s based costs £15,915 when you add on the Diamond Pack and sunroof with which all Sprites are equipped, plus the normal dealer delivery charge of £545. So, for just £80 more than the standard Sprite, Siena 4 SB buyers get more than £1000-worth of additional equipment, in an exclusive model.

The deal is an eye-catcher, but even before you get to know you the figures, the distinctive, angular red graphics and colourscheme of the soft furnishings are the aspects of the Siena sure to get your attention. The sea-green turquoise of the big poppies on the curtains and padded panels alongside the bedroom window conjures thoughts of blue sky and blue sea images sunny summer holidays – in Tuscany, perhaps!

Our verdict

Perhaps it’s the gorgeous turquoise sunny-holiday-image fabrics. Perhaps it’s the set of the cushions and deep-pile, quality towels embroidered with the Siena name. Perhaps it’s the red graphics. Or maybe it’s all of those things that make the Siena a caravan with a bright, sensational image. No other caravan looks like a Siena. And by the time you’ve been wooed by the colours and the luxuries you’re bound to be impressed by getting extras amounting in value to more than £1000 for a mere £80.
