The Sprite Musketeer EB is a great family caravan. Five-berth caravans don’t come much lighter and cheaper than this. Sprite’s newcomer gets high build quality – and a brilliant, large lounge

Full review

The smart, light, bright budget Sprite range has grown by two clever new layout models in the last few months. First it was the Musketeer TD (twin dining areas) – and now the Musketeer EB (end bunks).
This latest triumph in lightweight family leisure innovation uses the now-standard – and increasingly popular – triple bunk device – but places it across the rear of the caravan. And, with lots of little shelves and cupboards in this rear section, the amount of storage space – given that the caravan is only 4.74m long – is phenomenal.
Living space is extraordinary, too – that’s because the lounge is U-shaped, and also because the window is a one-piece unit. Single front windows have long been associated with so-called budget, or entry-level caravans. But we say they give such a light, bright aspect to caravan lounges that their use should be extended up into more expensive, higher-spec ranges.
While on the subject of specification, Sprite gives you two key options that raise the price a little but give you a great advantage. One is a microwave oven, built into the ready-made housing above the cooker. That will add  £120 to your bill – and whether it’s important to you is down to how you, as a family, cook. The other option is really important – and excellent value. Little wonder few Sprites are sold without the Diamond Pack. You get an AL-KO Secure wheel lock receiver, an AL-KO AKS 3004 hitch-head stabiliser and a spare wheel and its under-slung carrier. Take a close looks at those items: if you buy the wheel lock you can expect a chunk off your insurance bill as caravan specialist insurance companies recognise their effectiveness by reducing your premium. The stabiliser will transform your tow stability – and the spare wheel is essential anyway. You also get some luxuries in the Diamond Pack: alloy wheels, a door flyscreen, plus two scatter cushions and a radio/CD player with i-Pod connection. The pack adds just 35kg and £399 to your bill – and lifts the Spite from basic to well-equipped status.
Considering the short length of the caravan, the kitchen is surprisingly practical in storage terms. That’s because, in addition to the small central kitchen cabinet, there is a reasonably large cupboard with a drawer above – plenty of accommodation here for tall items.
Again keeping in mind the short length of the caravan, clothing storage for five is really good.  Large cavities at the foot of each bunk take care And there’s a surprise in this bedroom area. On the offside is a slim door, giving access to the bottom two bunks. Not, we hope, designed for a midnight escape route – the real reason for its presence is that you can fold the bottom two bunks up and use the area for storage in transit.
Something important about this amazing caravan comes in the form of bed dimensions. Because the bunks are across the rear, they’re all 1.83m long; that’s six feet in case you’re measuring in old money.
The washroom is, like the kitchen, surprisingly well-proportioned. The loo is bench-style, so giving more floor space, the shower area is adequate and has a curtain to keep in the splashes – and there is a good-sized washbasin set into a triangular unit. No comprises here – and the little room looks well above budget status.

Our verdict

The end-bunk Sprite Musketeer manages to provide beds for five and a superbly large lounge in just 4.74m of caravan. It feels spacious – partly because of its panoramic front window and also because it’s 2.23m wide. That’s the same width as most of the Charismas, for example. If you’re looking for a caravan that keeps the price and the weight – and the length – down to a minimum, yet gives you enough space for a family of five, you’ve probably found it in the Musketeer EB. Sheer genius!
