At a glance

Is The Lunar Lexon 530 simply yet another fixed-bed, single-axle caravan? Yes – but it’s far from boring. The 530’s clear identity is all in the middle, the all-important action areas for the cook…

Full review

This fixed bed model economises on length by putting the shower-toilet room alongside the bed. It gives that length to the lounge, so the settees are full length. Which means there’s more lounging and dining space – and more comfort. But, more importantly, it means that this short fixed-bed caravan is a credible and practical four-berth.
The 530 is only 5.79 metres long, yet its instant appeal is that it’s more spacious than its length would suggest. It also appears to be wider than most caravans – yet, at 2.28 metres, it isn’t.
There are three reasons for the spacious feel. Firstly, the shower is alongside the bed, so the bed is at the back of the caravan, rather than being pushed into the centre by a washroom behind it. The second reason is that there is a space along the entire foot of the bed – space enough to walk along, so the bed-making task is far easier than on a fixed bed that’s enclosed by furniture at the food end.
The third factor is the wide central floorspace, between the kitchen and the enormous dresser; it’s this furniture feature that gives the 530 its defining style. It doesn’t only look good, in a classy, very slightly traditional sort of way (that’s down to the wide mirror, edged with plush, suede-look fabric); it creates a huge amount of extra kitchen surface space.
It’s not until you use a caravan that you really get an in-depth insight as to how well (or otherwise) each layout works – and this kitchen, put to its first test as lunchtime approaches, proved to be even more impressive than our first look had revealed. Yes, there’s a great expanse of surface. But there’s more. The big, round chopping board cover for the sink can be moved around to suit the task on hand. This time it’s on the top of the hob cover, with tomatoes ready to be chopped. It’s away from the sink so that we can wash salad leaves, then it’s back over the sink so that we can use the hob… We quickly came to love this kitchen because it works so incredibly well.
We also loved the ways in which the 530 caters for TV watching. Lunar has given you two options. You can sit a TV on the dresser and take its power from the socket on the wall. Or, if you want to keep the dresser TV-free, you can mount your TV on the bracket alongside the connection points, and then rotate it to face the bedroom or lounge. And the dresser is of sufficient size to enable you to sit the TV on it and angle it either towards the front or the back of the caravan.
Compared with other fixed-bed models, the position of the 530’s shower alongside the bed, rather than behind it, will drawer criticism from  some caravan buyers who prefer the cohesion of keeping all the washing equipment together behind a door. Fair comment though that is, the advantage of the 530’s layout, with the bed pushed right to the back of the caravan, gives you more living space. After all, you spend rather less time in the shower room than in the lounge and kitchen!
Storage levels are high, with 11 top cabinets plus the one over the kitchen, and four drawers beneath the wardrobe. And the bedding lockers under the settees have doors running their entire length, making access easy.
Access to the under-bed area is easy, too – it lifts up effortlessly – and there’s an exterior hatch so that you can slide in folding chairs, for example, from the outside

Our verdict

We heaped praise all over the Lexon 530 – we think it hits the spot in so many practical layout ways. Small detail counts, too; among the little things we like is the rail across the shower roof for drying towels. Another is the position of the table store, beside the bed, creating a shelf and a recess that’s perfect for books and magazines. We think the conclusion has to be that this is one superb caravan for family and couple needs.

Advantages

Fixed bed
Long settees
Big central dresser
Rail across the shower
