The twin-axle Delta TI for 2012 is laden with goodies including a tracking system, Alde heating, a tower fridge, and a double bed running across the full width of the caravan

Full review

If you’re a caravanner who thinks fixed beds intrude on living area, this model could change your mind. Lunar has turned an island bed through 45 degrees and put its head against the nearside wall. You get walking space along its foot and a more open feel to the bedroom area than in a layout with a longitudinal island bed. It’s a popular option – little wonder, then, that Lunar takes the TI into 2012 unchanged.
The Delta’s in the top price bracket and it has all the kit you’d expect, including an Alde central heating system. We’re surprised to see that the caravan’s weight is only 1735kg (MTPLM) – that’s amazingly light for a near-eight-metre caravan with two axles and a 175-litre fridge. Only the Bailey Unicorn Barcelona, at 1756kg, has a comparable weight for the same length.
Deltas have the AL-KO ATC trailer stability control system that applies small amounts of brake pressure if it detects that the caravan has moved out of alignment. We’ve towed a lot of ATC-equipped caravans, on single and twin axles, and the reassurance of its presence makes for a more relaxing tow. On this test, a 20-mile journey to a campsite north of Lunar’s Preston factory and back, the Delta demonstrated its capability at 60mph with perfect stability on motorways (no hint of twitch as we overtook lorries in fairly windy conditions).
Many people assume that four-berth vans with fixed double beds are for couples. But, unusually, the Delta TI has family appeal, with its full-length single beds in the front lounge.
The double bed is flanked by wardrobes, each with a drawer and shoe cupboard. Additional space comes in the form of an angled dressing table with a double door. There are two sets of TV connection and satellite points.
The transverse bed and extra floor space may be the Delta’s attention-grabber, but there’s much more to woo families and couples. Few caravans equal the kitchen in storage terms; there are three cupboards. And two more shelves in the dresser alongside the door. Add in the huge capacity of the big fridge and you have as much storage as in many domestic kitchens.
The 175-litre fridge deserves more than passing comment; shelves are deep enough to take juice and milk cartons, so they don’t all have to go in the door recess. These fridges just never get full – and stuff doesn’t have to be crammed in, so you can see what you’ve got at a glance.
Our test day was cold, so the Alde heating was tested fully. It’s the first thing you switch on when you arrive on a site because it takes longer to warm up than a blown air system. But once it reached 22 degrees (about an hour) we relished its evenly-distributed, silent warmth.
The Delta has a heated towel rail in the shower room – that’s part of the Alde system. An extra towel loop on the shower room’s sliding door would have improved the Delta’s towel accommodation; there’s only one loop.

Our verdict

The Lunar Delta TI. with an equipment list that extends to a tracking system and ATC, is Lunar’s flagship caravan. It has a relatively high price-tag, and justifies it well. Above all, the long-length settees that make single beds mean that this is a true family caravan. And that, in fixed bed layouts, is a rarity. You get all of this at less weight than most caravans of this length and level of specification. The Delta TI has a MIRO figure of 1575kg.

Advantages

Twin-axle stability
Transverse fixed bed
Alde heating
