Full review

Camino is the flagship of the Compass range. There are two single-axle models and two twin-axle models, of which the 660 is one.

The Compass Camino 660 has a transverse island bed in a secluded rear bedroom, separated from the kitchen and lounge by the shower and washroom, which are centrally located, spanning the width of the caravan.

The doors of the shower and toilet rooms close off the bedroom and living area. This means the washing facilities can be accessed from the bedroom and lounge area, making this a flexible layout for family use or occasional lounge-bedroom use.

Camino models have Alde heating. Specification includes the ATC stability enhancement system, which electronically detects the first sign of a snaking motion and corrects it by automatic application of the caravan’s brakes.

Caminos have Alde heating, complete with the Alde Load Monitor, which automatically switches off the heating when you are using a high-powered device like the microwave, to prevent you from tripping the power supply to your pitch.

The 660 also has a 40-litre onboard water tank and comes with an Aquasource water line to connect the caravan to a water supply on a pitch.

Kitchen storage is plentiful, with three drawers and cabinets plus a cabinet and drawer opposite, alongside the fridge. The fridge-freezer is the 155-litre capacity model with a removable freezer compartment to increase chill space.

Lighting surrounds the long, rectangular skylight that stretches the length of the lounge. A rim of light sits under the edge of the kitchen work surface. A light comes on automatically when you open the wardrobe.

Two Al-Ko Diamond Standard wheel locks come as standard with the 660.

Equipment includes an alarm system. These models have a barbecue point and an exterior storage access hatch with a main socket. Two twin USB sockets are standard, too.

Compass caravans, like all the caravans made by the Erwin Hymer Group in County Durham, are made using a fully bonded technique called SoLiD, which stands for Strong, Light and Dry. They also have a GRP underskin to provide a water resistant barrier.

Verdict

Caminos are luxuriously appointed with a high level of equipment.

Finesse features include lighting set under the kitchen work surface edge and a light that comes on automatically when you open the wardrobe; these enhance the appeal of this range, together with the versatility of being able to remove the freezer compartment to increase chill space when you need it.

The 660’s layout provides a luxurious bedroom at the rear, completely separated from the day area by the central en suite shower room. It all adds up to the fact that the 600 is a star in its class.
