Britain’s most expensive caravan, the Airstream Colorado, justifies its price tag with timeless style and luxury features
Airstream, the iconic American brand of shiny, riveted touring caravans, imports three models to the UK via the Swift Group. These three new caravans, with strong echoes of the original 1930s originals, range in price from £78,495, for the single-axle Missouri, to £91,995 for the giant twin-axle Colorado.
The highest price is the bestseller and the heaviest, with a leviathan MTPLM of 2,400kg.
The Colorado features a transverse island bed at the rear, Alde heating and a 190-litre fridge/freezer.
As with all Airstreams, it has the distinctive riveted metal body, gas housing sat up on the drawbar, and single-glazed glass windows. The interior walls are lined with brushed steel; like the exterior, the rivets are a prominent feature.
Buyers can choose between different upholstery options for the U-shaped lounge – leather or fabric – all for the same price. The black fabric and leather options are modern, teamed with black and white curtains and cushions. The brown leather option, with stitched edging detail, is rather retro. All have strong character and irresistible appeal.
The kitchen surface is grooved to form a drainer, a feature more commonly seen in high-end domestic kitchens than in anything on wheels. Cooking equipment is a combined oven/grill and a three-burner hob.
Amazing style is everywhere, including the frosted window on the door that leads to the shower compartment. Its oval metal frame is riveted. By high-end caravan standards the shower room is small, but the room does have a separate shower and outstanding features including stunning bright lime coloured walls and a heated towel rail in a recess.
We especially like the rounded corners on the interior walls and furniture, as well as the spotlights set into the steel roof.
