Indiana-based manufacturer Global Caravan Technologies has given us the first look at its all-carbon fibre caravan, the CR-1 Carbon, claiming to offer substantial buyer benefits including high fuel economy figures when towed, serious structural strength, smart control functions and innovative, luxury designs.

Touring aerodynamics are said to be improved through a reduction in exterior height, decreasing drag by lowering the unit's centre of gravity.

Caravan magazine FacebookWeight reduction has also been at the forefront of GCT's production plans, as its use of "Rapid Composites Manufacturing technology" gives the CR-1 a construction blueprint closer to that of aircraft than conventional leisure vehicles.

"Consumer-driven innovation is at the heart of GCT's mission," said Harrison Ding, chairman and president of Global Caravan Technologies. "We built a transformative product through collaborations with world-class partners."

Now see what the CR-1 Carbon looks like on the inside!

Commenting on the design process, the GCT president also said: "We are proud to say that we engaged designers from Asia to the heart of the US auto industry in Detroit. In the mix were luxury RV enthusiasts, who helped point us in the right direction regarding new features and content."

CR-1 Carbon caravan by Global Caravan Technologies

The CR-1 Carbon model has come from liasions between various areas of automotive and motorsport, IT and aerospace industries. One company involved in creating the carbon caravan was Dallara, the world's largest race car builder, with expertice in monocoque construction and aerodynamic extertise through a history in Formula 1, IndyCar and other race series outlets.

"We approached the development of the CR-series with an absolute premium on interior space," explained GCT's CEO and chief product architect Charles Hoefer. "We have really pushed the envelope in taking a new design to market, which features a modern exterior, yet brilliantly spacious interior."

This achievement is just the start for the US brand, as Charles continues: "The CR-1 is GTC's proud achievement. This product demonstrates our capabilities, and we're not slowing down as we are making plans to launch a super-luxury fifth wheel, along with plans to begin motorhome development in 2015."
