New southwest road trip route launched

6943be75-86d2-46b5-90fc-83d34ac2b6fc

A new road trip route taking in the highlights and coastline of England’s southwest counties has been launched

The South West 660 is a new 660-mile route that runs from Poole in Dorset around Devon and Cornwall to Watchet in Somerset.

The new tour, which aims to rival Ireland’s Wild Atlantic Way and Scotland’s North Coast 500, has been designed to be enjoyed in one motoring marathon holiday or split into shorter sections. It includes some of Britain’s most acclaimed scenery, including two World Heritage Coastal Sites, with the vast majority of the roads within Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty.

It is actually made up of 12 curated 50-mile routes, designed to encourage drivers to take their time and explore this beautiful corner of the UK. Driving off-peak tourism, it is packed with secret beaches, hidden attractions and little-known views.

While it features smaller coastal roads, which may not be ideal for larger motorhomes, the organisers say it’s the perfect way to discover quiet waterside hamlets, beach cafés and pubs with sea views that only locals know about. Signing up to the South West 660 website allows visitors to unlock the curated routes and exclusive membership offers along the way.

The route has been designed to be as sustainable as possible and encourage low-season tourism. Visitors are inspired to enjoy ‘slow travel’, with many of the 12 route sections devised to deflect traffic from busy trunk roads and congested resorts. The South West 660 is dedicated to supporting local suppliers and hospitality providers.
