Devon remains a highly popular destination with campers and caravanners thanks to the outstanding natural beauty of the region and the huge number of exciting activities to choose from. Whether you want to explore the exhilarating coastal walking trails, take part in some open-water sailing or keep the kids entertained, there are plenty of options to choose from and a wide range of campsites to stay at.

The perfect place to spend an Easter break or a summer staycation, we’ve put together our choice of top campsites from south Devon and north Devon and the best things to do while you’re there. To view an even bigger selection of campsites in Devon visit our Campsite Finder.

California Cross Camping & Caravanning Club Campsite, Modbury

For stunning views of the surrounding hillside book a pitch at California Cross Camping & Caravanning Park. Although the sloped pitches mean you will require levelling blocks for some of these pitches, the wide open views and secluded location more than make up for this. Choose from grass or gravelled hard standings on the lower area, or grassy touring pitches on the higher section. The site benefits from a thoroughly modern toilet block with shower & laundry facilities and the nearby California Inn serves up hearty meals when you don’t feel up to cooking. Pitch prices start from £17.40 for 2 adults with electric.

Lady’s Mile Holiday Park, Dawlish Premier Parks

Consisting of over 450 pitches, Lady’s Mile Holiday Park is an impressive size and includes a whole host of onsite facilities to keep families happy. Children will love the huge outdoor pool and its 63 metre long flume ride. The campsite also has a range of outdoor restaurants, a smaller indoor pool and gym facilities, not to mention multiple brick toilet blocks and a large laundry house. There’s even an outdoor play area with a child-friendly climbing tower that’s sure to keep kids busy. The mini-supermarket offers a fantastic range of food and supplies and all pitches come with electric hook-ups. Price start from £15 based on 2 adults.

Oakdown Holiday Park, Weston

Winner of the 2011 South West Regional Campsite of the Year, Oakdown not only has great facilities but is also set within the breath-taking World Heritage site of the Jurassic Coast. This beautifully presented campsite is spread across secluded fields that can easily be accessed from the main road and has recently been refurbished. The new facilities now boast deluxe heated toilets and showers, baby changing rooms, a larger laundry room and a food preparation area with access to microwaves and freezers. Extra amenities include a games room complete with TV and table football and an internet room. A shop can also be found in the golf course opposite. Pitch prices start from £15.20 for 2 adults with electric.

Ruda Holiday Park, Croyde Bay

The surfs up at Ruda Holiday Park, set a short distance from the golden sands of Croyde Bay Beach and the rugged wild coastline of North Devon. Perfectly located for a spot of beach hopping, Ruda is close to Croyde Bay and the well-loved Saunton Sands making it ideal for surfing as well as casual paddling. The campsite pool, Cascades, is sure to keep children in high spirits and there is plenty of space for outdoor activities on the accompanying playing fields. The onsite store contains all the essentials, and free Wi-Fi is a welcome extra. There’s even a coffee shop and restaurant to take the chore out of meal time. Pitch prices start from £17.00 for 2 adults and electric.

Enjoy the rides at Dingles Fairground Centre

Housing the national fairground collection, Dingles is a wonderful exhibition of the UK’s fairground heritage. Adults and children alike will be enthralled by the traditional atmosphere of the indoor amusements, from the vintage carousels and waltzers to the old fashioned fairground games.  Ticket prices start from £6.

Spend the day in Clovelly village

The idyllic village of Clovelly offers a unique snapshot of traditional Devonshire life. The tranquil cobbled streets remain uninterrupted by cars as vehicles are prohibited from the narrow roads. Discover the prehistoric past by journeying down into Kents Cavern. Tours will take small groups on a route through the incredible network of caves to reveal the astonishing geological story of this region. Kids will love the Dragon’s Lair with its display of stalagmites and the chance to hunt for fossils along the Fossil Trail. The caves also make a great starting point for a coastal walk of the English Riviera Geopark offering amazing views across Lyme Bay.

Visit The Donkey Sanctuary at Sidmouth

Founded in 1969, The Donkey Sanctuary in Sidmouth is the largest charity of its kind in Europe and is devoted to helping improve the lives of donkeys all over the world. There are over 500 donkeys at Slade Farm who are left to graze peacefully across the site and it makes a truly lovely location for a family picnic. Admission is free and visitors can explore the 5 walking trails that guide you around the sanctuary grounds before stopping to pet the main yard donkeys in the stables.
