Caravan Awards: Best Lightweight Caravan for Families 2019

The lightweight caravan for families (under 1500kg) category was another tough one. There was not much in the scores between the models showing the vast choice available for buyers this year.

Bailey Phoenix 650

Rear shower room, bunks plus side dining area

Bailey Phoenix 650

What's special?

Beds for five in a well-planned and unusual layout.

Two bunks on the nearside and a single bed to create from a dining area, directly opposite; the 650 has a cleverly-designed layout which gives the kids their area by day as well as by night. And if there are four rather than five aboard, this layout gives you the bonus of a permanent dining area.

The shower room spans the width of the caravan and is nicely spacious.

The £229 Phoenix option pack is rather fabulous, with four bright pink and purple cushions and two luxurious large pure wool throws, plus a carpet for the washroom. You don't need to go for it, of course, but who wouldn't?

Xplore 586

Xplore 586

Offside rear shower room, nearside rear bunks

What's special?

It's only 1370kg MTPLM. And it has a brilliantly-designed, practical layout.

The six-berth 586 is an ideal layout for young families, with two bunks in the rear nearside corner and two more to create from the offside dining area. A tall cabinet, which houses the table and gives space for more items, creates good separation between the dining area and the lounge.

The shower room runs longitudinally, on the offside, with a wardrobe to separate the little room from the bunks.

Sprite Major 6

Sprite Major 6

Nearside bunks, offside dining area, offside corner shower room

What's special?

Two wardrobes! Practical dark grey seating upholstery amid a modern and appealing fabric scheme.

The Sprite Major 6 has been a stalwart of family caravanning for generations, always light and always with practicality at the forefront of its appeal.

Its layout has evolved down the years, of course, and now gives buyers a washroom in the offside rear corner (with a separate shower), bunks on the nearside and a wardrobe between the two. There's a second wardrobe forward of the dining area (which makes into two bunks).
