Caravan Awards: Best Caravan for Seasonal Siting 2017

8c6ea44f-00a2-4a9e-9dad-5c0b8b530162

A new category for 2017 to reflect the popularity of siting a tourer on one park for the whole season.

Best Caravan for Seasonal Siting

Winner: Buccaneer Commodore

£31,699

You’d expect the winner of this award to be a big caravan; tourers bought to be used more like holiday apartments or static caravans need to offer plenty of space.

The Commodore is a generous 2.45m (eight feet) wide and has an overall length of just over eight metres. But, of course, there’s much more than spaciousness at stake in this sector. The Commodore AL-KOnotched up consistently high marks throughout the scoring system, especially for its lovely big lounge and its sleeping arrangements. The transverse bedroom, at the rear, is entirely separate from the day area, very static caravan in concept, with the shower and separate toilet area forward of the bedroom.

Buccaneer luxury is immense, with underfloor heating as part of the Alde system, a 40-litre water tank and an Aquasource connector to enable you to connect to the mains supply on your pitch. Buccaneers also have the Alde load monitor, which prevents you from exceeding your pitch’s electricity capacity.

Highly Commended : Lunar Alaria RI Lunar Alaria RI

£32,499

The three-model Alaria range, unveiled in October, follows the layouts of the Lunar Delta range, with additional equipment including a controllable coloured lighting system in the lounge.

These are luxurious caravans, and with lounge furniture that is much more akin in design to those you’d find in a static caravan than a tourer, hence the arrival of this range for the shortlist for the Seasonal Siting award. But why the RI, rather than the TS, with twin beds, or the TI, with its transverse island bed forward of the full-width shower room?

The reason we picked the RI is that this model has two very clearly separated rooms, again rather like a static caravan might be, with a rear bedroom and the shower room spanning the width of the caravan in the centre of the layout. Superb!

Highly Commended : Adria Alpina Missouri Adria Alpina Missouri

£27,640

Like the Commodore, the Slovenian-built Missouri is a super-sized caravan; its width is 2.46m and it’s more than 8m long from hitch to tail lights. But, unlike any other caravan range, Alpinas have headrests in the corners of the lounge, and concave top lockers, a cleverly-designed style feature accentuated in white gloss finish.

These two factors contribute to the Missouri’s appeal as a seasonally-sited caravan, where lounge looks and space are paramount. And the Missouri has amazing lighting design, enhancing its almost house-like caravan appeal.

Highly Commended: Knaus StarClass 690 Knaus StarClass 690

£29,999

Another continental-manufactured caravan, this time from Germany, the StarClass is a prestigious caravan with startlingly stark black marble-effect table and kitchen surfaces.

Despite its continental origins, this model is specifically designed for the British market; it has the popular mid island bed, end shower room layout. Unlike most standard British caravans, though, the lounge is U-shaped, and, in common with others judged in this awards category, the StarClass 690’s lounge is delightfully spacious.

The model we judged was, in fact, the prototype; production models will have a sliding door to the shower room rather than a hinged one – so needing less floor space. Our judged model has the leather upholstery option, attracting an increase of £1500. We’d go for that if we bought this caravan, especially if we intended to site it for a whole season – the leather lounge looks so “house!”

Highly Commended: Hobby 560 CFe Excellent

Hobby 560 CFe Excellent

£22,795

Excellent in name and excellent in nature – this is a lovely caravan, with equipment including a 50-litre water tank, a large (150-litre) fridge-freezer and a bed, at the front of the caravan, which is 1.96m long. The lounge has a massive amount of seating, arranged in a C-shape, wrapping around to form a divider with the kitchen. There are plenty of refinements including a spice rack in a kitchen cabinet, and the comfort of a sprung mattress.
