Bailey Pegasus Grande GT75

The Best Budget Lightweight Family Caravans

Buying advice

We’ve picked some of the best new family lightweight caravans to consider, no more than 1,500kg MTPLM and starting at just £12,849.

From the diminutive Xplore 304 to much more spacious options, the choice in the lightweight family sector is plentiful.

There is, of course, much more to picking the ideal caravan for your needs than price and weight, although suiting your budget and getting a caravan that’s a stable mate for your towcar are both pretty vital.

Which model suits you best depends not just on the figures but on the layout, and picking the ideal layout for you depends on how you use the caravan.

OAL Best Lightweight Caravan 2026

Sprite Alpine 4 DB

The Sprite Alpine 4 DB makes its case by getting the basics right: low weight, a sensible price and a layout that feels useful for a family. At £21,495, this new-for-2026 model immediately stood out to the judges as a caravan that understands its market.

For many buyers, especially those watching towing limits, weight is not a minor detail. It is often the first thing they check. This Sprite does well there, but it is the way the space has been used that gives it its real appeal.

Inside, the talking point is the rear nearside dining area. It is an unusual arrangement, with the space converting into bunks when the upper bed is folded down from the wall.

The result is a tucked-away sleeping area that gives children their own corner without making the caravan feel compromised. That same rear section also includes a sizeable cabinet, complete with mains socket and mirror, so it can be used for storage or as a small dressing area.

Across the caravan, in the offside rear corner, the shower room is more generous than the Alpine 4 DB’s compact dimensions suggest.

At 4.74m long and 2.23m wide, it makes good use of every available inch. The kitchen covers the essentials well, with a combined oven/grill and three-burner hob, while the lounge gives four people enough space to sit down for a meal or watch television together.

What helped it edge ahead was the overall balance. It is light enough to appeal to weight-conscious buyers, practical enough for family touring and priced keenly enough to make sense in a competitive class.

Xplore 304

Weighing only 893kg, the new Xplore 304 packs beds for four into less than four metres. It’s the shortest and lightest four-berth manufactured in Britain.

The price

£12,849

The details

We’ll start with the smallest, lightest and cheapest in our selection. Most layouts conform to a familiar pattern but the 304 is unique.

It has an L-shaped lounge (which makes a double bed) and an offside rear two-person dining area that transforms into bunks.

The shower toilet compartment is in the nearside rear corner.

Our view

It’s a great little caravan to get you started if you’re looking for something diminutive that can be towed by a relatively small car. A masterpiece in layout ingenuity!

Venus 590/6

The six-berth 590 is the latest addition to the lightweight Venus range. Soon after its arrival, it won Caravan magazine’s Best Family Lightweight Caravan Award.

The price

£15,899

The details

The new model in the Venus caravan range for 2017, this six-berth has a long kitchen and a rear area with bunks and a dining area.

The washroom is on the offside, opposite the kitchen, and contains a separate shower. All Venus caravans models have fully plastic-lined showers for 2017. Another new feature for 2017 is bed bases which slide out form under settees, replacing the slatted design which pulled out from beneath the front-central drawers.

Our view

Venus caravan models have three-burner hobs and combined oven/grills. This model’s lengthy kitchen is going to make family meal prep an easy task. One for keen cooks, definitely.

Bailey Pursuit 540-5

The Bailey Pursuit range is designed for buyers looking for touring on a budget. This is one of two family layouts in the range.

The Price

£14,865

The Details

The Pursuit 540-5 also has bunks, this time in the offside rear corner, with a cleverly-designed washroom that contains a slightly wedge-shaped shower big enough for a parent to shower two little caravanners, making this an ideal choice for a very young family.

There’s a nearside dining area which makes into two bunks.

Our view

Caravans with two lounges are a rarity, yet they work really well, giving each generation a separate area. This one is especially generous on rear lounge-play-dining-sleeping space.

Bailey Pursuit 560-5

The Bailey Pursuit 560-5 caravan is one of the lightest five-berths you can find, yet it gives the kids their own room with a solid door.

The Price

£14,965

The Details

It’s the same dimension as the 540-5, it sleeps the same number of people – but the 560 is a totally different layout.

This model has two lounge-dining areas. The rear lounge is slightly longer than the front one.

This area makes a bedroom for three, with a double bed and a bunk, rising up from its stowed position against the rear wall.

Sprite Freedom 6 TD

The Sprite Freedom 6 TD is a caravan to consider if you are thinking of graduating from tenting to caravanning. This new model is a lightweight six-berth with beds for six. It is the winner of Caravan magazine's 2016 Family Caravan under £15,000 award.

The Price

£14,620

The Details

Sprite Freedom caravans are lighter versions of Sprites. Like the Bailey Pursuit 560-5, this model also has two separate areas, but this time the rear sector has bunks and a dining area for three.

The offside central shower room contains a separate shower. Cooking equipment is a three-burner hob and mini grill.

Our view

Sprite Freedom caravans are specifically designed to appeal to first-time buyers, with less equipment than Sprites; one to look at if lack of weight is paramount over kit.

It’s worth noting that 2017 Freedoms are rather cosier in appearance than the 2016 models in that they have full curtains compared with the simple panels in the 2016 Freedoms.

Sprite Major 6

The Sprite Major 6 is up among the most popular caravans for young families,. This iconic model gets a new look for 2016, and new features including brackets for a cycle rack.

The Price

£15,755

The Details

The Sprite Major 6 is a well-established mainstay of family budget caravanning. It’s been regarded as the iconic affordable family tourer for many years.

This model has bunks on the offside, a shower room with separate shower on the nearside and an offside two-person dining area to make into two more bunks.

Sprite caravans have three-burner hobs, ovens and separate grills.

Our view

More money and slightly heavier than the Sprite Freedom caravan we picked, the Major 6 has been a best-seller for many years. There has to be a good reason for that. We love it.

Adria Altea Tamar

With three bunks in a stack, the Tamar is specifically designed for families with young children. This sleeping arrangement is pretty much perfect for little people, especially if one of the young caravanners is still at the tumbling-out-of-bed stage; the bottom bunk is only mattress-depth from the floor so any rolling out of bed incidences wouldn’t incur any bruises.

The Price

£15,390

The Details

The Tamar has a side dining area, a nearside kitchen with an inline three-burner hob and an oven-grill above the fridge on the aft end of the kitchen.

Bunks are in the offside corner; there’s a wardrobe in the centre of the rear wall and a shower room with a separate shower in the nearside corner.

Our view

This caravan layout has a lovely open-plan aspect, created by the U-shaped lounge and central dining area. The attractively stark styling is just simply nice!

Factors to consider when choosing a family caravan include:

When choosing a family caravan, it is important that you consider all your preferences and think about exactly what you are looking for in a caravan.

The ultimate list of things to consider for your family caravan

  • Is a separate shower important to you? Or do you always use campsite showers?
  • What is the lightest 2 berth caravan?
  • Are the kids of an age where a separate rear family area is preferred?
  • What is the best small caravan for you?
  • Is a sizeable kitchen important to you?
  • Do you prefer a caravan with a microwave?
  • And is a full-sized oven with a separate grill your preference?
  • Are you looking for small caravans?
  • What is the best lightweight caravan under 750kg

Just as important as all of the above is something that’s entirely subjective: Does the caravan suit your personal taste in décor and fabric style?

One more factor to consider

Don’t imagine that looking at lightweight caravans rules out getting one with the tow stability advantage of twin axles. If twins are your preference, look carefully at the Venus 620/6

FAQ

  • What is the best small caravan?

It really depends on what you mean by small, whether you’re after something lightweight and easy to tow or a micro-caravan. If you're looking for the best on the market, our 2026 winner for Best Lightweight Caravan is the Sprite Alpine 4 DB.

Priced at £21,495, it’s a clever four-berth that somehow fits a unique bunk layout and a decent kitchen into a body just 4.74m long. It’s perfect if you need to keep the weight under 1,500kg without feeling cramped. For those wanting something even tinier, you can check out our Best Micro Caravan winner on our awards page.

  • What is the lightest 2 berth caravan?

Strictly speaking, the Freedom Microlite Bijoux is the lightest 2-berth tourer, with an unladen weight of just 580kg and a maximum weight (MTPLM) of only 680kg. But, if you prefer a more traditional and full-height caravan, – with a proper washroom – the Bailey Discovery D4-2 is one of the lightest on the market, weighing in at 998kg.

  • What is the best lightweight caravan under 750kg?

The Swift Basecamp 2 is a great choice that hits that 750kg MTPLM target. It’s a sporty-looking tourer that’s easy to tow – especially with a smaller car – yet it still feels like a proper, modern caravan once you're inside.
