Briarfields campsite makes eco-friendly changes
Briarfields Motel and Touring Park, in Cheltenham, has recently taken a number of steps to become a more eco-friendly and sustainable site
The adults-only touring and camping site, which is part of the exclusive Premier Parks group, has invested in battery technology to replace all of its petrol-powered maintenance machinery, including battery-powered strimmers, mowers, hedge cutters and pitch edgers.
Its new new fully serviced pitches are also now lit with low-level LEDs and all electric usage is 10A.
Jo Sanderson, owner of Briarfields alongside husband, Scott, explains,
In December and February we banished all our diesel vehicles and replaced them with electric. Last month saw the final piece of this particular jigsaw, when we took delivery of our electric ride-on mower. We no longer buy fossil fuels at Briarfields for park maintenance.
Of course this is all well and good, but charging batteries isn’t without its emissions as it takes power to charge them. This is why we always consider just when we actually charge our batteries.
Usually we charge our batteries during the small hours of the night when demand in the UK is as low as it can be. Often at those times most of our electric is being produced by wind turbines and nuclear as well as some hydro. We have an app which tells us exactly how our energy is being produced at any one time and we use this as a guide to charge our batteries.
Briarfields has also put focus on creating a diverse habitat for wildlife on site, and has created wild areas with thick hedging for nesting birds, alongside beehives, bug hotels, hedgehog houses, butterfly houses and numerous bird nesting boxes.
To further expand its eco credentials, the site now plans to install electric vehicle charging points, solar panels to offset its electric usage, and air source heat pumps for hot water.
Jo adds,
The environment is always at the forefront of our minds in developing our park in a sustainable way that benefits our guests and creates a wonderful, diverse habitat for wildlife.
