As you drive into this pretty little family-run Adult only campsite, at the bottom of the hamlet of Hollesley, you are greeted by an array of flower beds and beautifully manicured lawns, surrounding an ornate lily pond, teeming with koi and goldfish.
Lying close to the market town of Woodbridge, and one-and-a-half miles from the sea, where sea fishing abounds, there is plenty to occupy you for a few days or longer. An air of peace and tranquillity prevails, a place to escape the hustle and bustle of everyday life, and the perfect base for exploring the wonderful countryside of Suffolk. Seasonal pitches (April-October inclusive) are available.
Sutton Hoo (National Trust) is close by, which is a unique and fascinating archaeological site, described as ‘page one of English History’. It was in 1938 that the famous Basil Brown was hired to investigate some mysterious earth mounds, leading to the ultimate discovery – the remains of a 90ft ship of an Anglo-Saxon king. The finds included many objects of gold and silver, and the exhibition has a full-size reconstruction of the burial chamber.
Orford and Framlingham Castles are a short drive away – two very different castles. Orford was built in the 12th century and its single remaining tower with no less than 21 sides is unique in Britain.
Framlingham has twelve hollow towers, connected by a large 13m curtain wall. The walk along this wall offers wonderful views of the small market town and scenery beyond. Woodbridge offers boating, riverside walks and the famous Tide Mill on the River Deben, close to the marina. The little village takes you back into time with its cobbled streets and bow-window shops. There are several good restaurants and pubs where you can enjoy a variety of different dishes.
