Hollins Farm, run by family-owned Holgates Caravan Parks, regularly scoops top gold accolades in the David Bellamy Conservation Awards and was the winner of the AA Best North West Campsite 2016.
The family camping and caravanning site, situated at the very heart of the beautiful Silverdale and Arnside Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB), is highly regarded for its unique and diverse ecology including rare species of butterflies. Covering an area of 75 kilometres, including many individual designated wildlife sites, this AONB’s landscape and biodiversity is recognised as a resource of regional, national and international importance – an ethos which Hollins Farm’s work is firmly in synergy with.
The holiday park was commended by the awarding body for planting 2500 indigenous trees and shrubs on-site to encourage wildlife habitats, augment the natural landscape and increase bio-diversity, in addition to offsetting CO2 emissions. Among those planted were native oak, ash, birch, hazel, holly and hawthorn.
Hollins Farm’s conservation efforts continue, with the construction of a brand new, fully insulated washroom facility which uses locally quarried limestone in order to blend perfectly with the original neighbouring farm buildings.
Silverdale’s scenic Butterfly Walks play a key part in its conservation activities. Launched in July 2011, the walks provide the chance to see some of the UK’s rarest butterflies including the Duke of Burgandy and High Brown Fritillary, in over 50 acres of woodland managed in partnership with Butterfly Conservation.
The holiday park company are now planning to release some of its herd of Shetland Ponies in to the designated woodland in order to naturally maintain the required habitat for the butterflies, thereby preserving and hopefully expanding the site’s butterfly population.
Holgates offers peaceful holiday parks for caravans, motorhomes and tents in Cumbria and Lancashire.
