Located just off the A3122 to Dartmouth, Woodlands is a family theme park and a caravan park. The obvious assumption to make here is that this is some second-rate campsite tacked onto the side of a theme park. And this assumption could not be further from the truth.
The reality is that Woodlands Caravan Park has won a raft of awards over the years (including receiving the Trip Advisor Certificate of Excellence in 2014 and now being an AA five pennant park) and is a first-rate campsite in its own right – you’ll want to stay here even if you don’t have any kids. Throw in the fact that the leisure park is also excellent – and completely free if you stay for two nights or more – and you have a very appealing proposition indeed for families.
The campsite is located by driving directly through the leisure park car park, with a large holding area set aside for new arrivals. Book in and a helpful warden on a golf buggy will then escort you to your pitch. The pitches are set in three areas – Hillcrest, Falcon’s View and Well Park – and there are 300 in total (250 with 10 amp electric hook-up). Hardstandings are available in Falcon’s View. These are all built into a valley location and linked together by wide tarmac roads.
Each of the pitches are grouped together on terraced plots of between five to ten pitches. Thanks to mature hedging and lots of shrubs, bushes, flowers and plants, this makes each separate area feel like it’s your own personal camping area. The actual level of maintenance and presentation of the site is also of a very high order.
Central to each of the three camping fields is a decent brick-built toilet block. These won ‘Loo of the Year’ in 2004 (the same year the site won AA Campsite of the Year for England) and are large, well-equipped and comprehensive in facilities. The largest of these is on Falcon’s View and features showers, toilets, sinks, full laundry facilities, a pay phone and disabled toilets. The family washrooms are in separate rooms and feature baby changing tables and baths. It also has covered outside dish-washing areas and chemical disposal points.
Upstairs in this block is a massive kids games room, complete with air hockey, arcade machines, penny falls and pool and table tennis tables – so when the leisure park is shut (after 6pm) the kids still have somewhere to go.
Dogs on leads are allowed on site – and there’s a fenced off dog walking area near reception.
Close to Hillcrest is a general store that offers groceries and camping accessories. The leisure park itself has a takeaway for hot food that is located near reception and offers pizza, pasta and salad (last orders are at 9.30pm it’s worth noting). Off-site there are lots of place to head for if you fancy going out for a meal. We’d head to Dartmouth for fish and chips plus a wide selection of restaurants, shops and pubs.
The actual leisure park is set in mature woodland, hidden from the caravan park. It’s well worth staying for at least two nights to take advantage of the free entrance deal (it will save a family of four over £50!).
Set in 60 acres of woodland, the leisure park offers a wide range of rides to suit all ages. There are water slides (which you go down fully clothed), toboggan runs, paddling pools, pedal karts, foam-ball blasting games, ball pools, slides and all manner of multi-coloured rides to keep you amused. For rainy days, there’s also the Empire of the Sea Dragon which is said to be the UK’s largest indoor play area. Woodlands Grove is close to Dartmouth Golf and Country Club too.
In the daytime, there are lots of places to eat in the leisure park – different outlets being open at different times of year – including hot and cold meals at various cafes.
