The editorial team's sites of choice in the north of England...

At just 40 minutes from Windermere, 30 minutes from Skipton and 30 minutes from Morecambe, Riverside Caravan Park couldn’t be better placed for a location from which to explore the Yorkshire Dales, the Lakes and the coast. The site is nestled on the banks of a river, within walking distance of the market town of High Bentham. There are plenty of local walks, you can fish on the river, and a golf course is close by. There are 61 touring pitches, including 12 fully serviced harstandings. On site facilities include toilets and showers, a family bathroom, laundry, games room and play area.

Waren Camping Park has 150 pitches set across a flat four-acre park with separate fields for tent campers and motorhomes/caravans, all set against a wonderfully scenic backdrop of the Northumberland coast. Waren offers WC and shower amenities with a heated extension that contains six privacy cubicles, including one with disabled facilities. There’s a parent and baby room, together with a family bathroom. A covered dishwashing area, motorhome service point and battery charging service are available. The onsite shop sells camping basics, and there’s a bar and restaurant. Budle Bay Sands beach is a short walk away, and within easy reach is Alnwick, with its gardens, castle, famous gargantuan bookshop and historic town, as well as Bamburgh Castle, the Farne Islands and Holy Island.

Pennine View Park is a family-run site on the edge of the Yorkshire Dales National Park, a mile from the centre of the historic market town of Kirkby Stephen and its railway station. It's also a short drive from both the Lake District National Park and the North Pennines, meaning that there are lots of walks and cycle routes nearby catering for all tastes from gentle country strolls to challenging mountain bike trails. Other activities nearby include fishing, horse riding and paragliding, and there are countless villages, castles and natural attractions within easy reach as well. All the attractions of Kirby Stephen including its shops, pubs and places to eat are just a short walk away from the campsite. The site has a playground, washing-up area, a laundrette and washrooms with free hot showers, baby bath and disabled facilities.

Just one mile from the best-preserved section of Hadrian's Wall at Housesteads, award-winning Herding Hill Farm sits peacefully amongst dry stone walls and rolling hills. With hardstanding and grass pitches, plus 17 all-season heated Wigwam cabins (some with hot tubs), this family and dog-friendly campsite is open all year. There's an immaculate underfloor heated amenities building including baths, an eight-person sauna, a laundry room and washing up area. A timber roman fort playground is a welcome attraction for smaller children, while the onsite petting farm has plenty of animal friends. The International Dark Skies Park at Cawfields Quarry is just a 15-minutes' walk, however the sky directly above the campsite is just as breathtaking on a clear night.
