Grantown on Spey Caravan Park campsite review
It’s a fair old trek from my home in middle England to Grantown-on-Spey, in the northern part of the Cairngorms National Park, but worth every one of those 400-plus miles. The highlands have long been a favourite destination and a trip there never seems like a slog. With a destination campsite of high quality to look forward to, I can think of worse ways to spend a day.
Grantown-on-Spey Caravan Park is just such a destination. All the important things here, like the loos, the pitches, even the roadway edgings, seem to be just a little better than most places. I visit a lot of campsites and often see an old red telephone box, usually looking rather sorry and decrepit – but not here, where it is practically in showroom condition. This is an example of the meticulous attention to detail that pervades everything on this campsite.
Surrounded by the dramatic vistas of the Cairngorms, and within striking distance of both Inverness and Elgin, this is a brilliant location for exploring this part of the Highlands. Fans of the country’s best export may be drawn here by the Malt Whisky Trail, which follows the River Spey from just up the road at Aviemore, past Grantown, to the coast at Buckie. Several distilleries offer tours and tastings, but I drew the short straw to be designated driver so had to take my tipples later on.
Grantown itself is a surprisingly lively town with an impressively wide main street and an excellent selection of independent shops and places to eat. Exploration revealed an impressive-looking golf club and, half-hidden in the woods, an intriguing old curling pond.
We found a lovely three-mile circular walk on a leaflet at reception, starting just uphill of the campsite and following a disused railway. It then climbed to a cairn, giving fabulous views, and returned via a picturesque waterfall giving the dogs a chance to get properly wet. Good job we brought plenty of towels.
