Top tips for bonfire night camping

Book ahead
Even at this time of year, campsites can be busy for Bonfire Night events so it makes sense to book in advance, especially if you want an electric hook-up.

Wrap up well
Temperatures drop quickly after dark in November so make sure you keep warm. This applies both outside as you watch the display and back at the tent. how to get a cosy night’s sleep.

Stay safe
Organised displays are generally safe but it’s always wise to drum it into youngsters that they need to be careful around fires and fireworks. It’s all down to common sense. If they are likely to be upset by loud noises, take ear protectors.

Leave pets at home
One of the joys of camping is being able to take your dog on holiday, but this is one time when you should consider leaving them at home, preferably with friends or family. The noise from loud fireworks going off close-by, coupled with the strange surroundings is likely to make even the most placid dog upset.

A weekend of live cabaret, hot drinks and a spectacular firework show, designed to make sure your weekend goes with a bang. For £99 you get two nights’ camping (Friday 2 and Saturday November), use of the leisure facilities, entertainment plus travel and entry to the bonfire and firework display in nearby Hunstanton. The Bonfire Night celebrations on the Saturday night near the Old Hunstanton lighthouse, also features fairground attractions, live music and food stalls.

When you get back to the site, you’ll be greeted with a hot, mulled wine and evening entertainment. Searles is a superbly-appointed, award-winning site just a few minutes’ walk from the sea and has everything you could need for a great break. It’s set in landscaped grounds and gardens with level pitches. Hunstanton has a sandy beach (dogs are welcome in certain areas), a long promenade with amusements and ice cream stalls, and a Sealife Centre.

Woodland waters

The park’s annual bonfire and fireworks display takes place on Saturday 3 November 2017. The bonfire is due to be lit around 6.30pm and the fireworks display will start at 7pm. Food and drinks are available. Set in a wooded valley covering 72 acres, Woodland Waters has many woodland paths and five fishing lakes. Woody’s Bar overlooks the 14-acre specimen lake and surrounding woodland, serving a range of ales, beers and wines.

The bar has a log burning stove, a pool table, French boules and two flatscreen TVs. The attached Lakeview restaurant serves home-made food. There are two amenity blocks both with toilets and showers and one with a laundry and facilities for the disabled.

Deers glade caravan camping park

The annual charity firework display and procession at this Norfolk campsite is an autumnal highlight and this year takes place on Saturday 27 October. The Candlelit Procession follows 'Guy Fawkes' from the site, through the woods up to nearby Muntjac Meadow where the fireworks display takes place. All manner of warming grub is on offer, including a hog roast, burgers, pies, vegetarian options and soup. And you’ll also find a beer tent, where mulled wine, cider, hot drinks, cake and sweets are  also available.

Deer’s Glade is set in a woodland clearing, where you can enjoy cycling down quiet country lanes, spotting the local wild deer, peaceful walks and on-site fishing. The emphasis here is on the countryside, wildlife and conservation and children will love the play area and animal paddock with goats, sheep and a donkey. Cycle hire can be arranged and a dog sitting service is offered if needed, although we’d recommend leaving pets at home this weekend.

Callow Top

Bonfire weekend at this popular Derbyshire site kicks off on Friday 9 November with bingo night, but the main event is on Saturday, when there will be a bonfire and fireworks display followed by a family disco. During the day there’s plenty to do too. From the site you have direct access to the Tissington Trail cycle route where you can cycle the 13 miles to Parsley Hay and then join the High Peak. For a less demanding ride, you can cycle into Ashbourne along the Tissington Trail, which takes about 15 minutes.

Callow Top offers a cycle hire service, so you don’t have to transport your own bikes along with all your camping gear. Callow Top has much else to recommend it. For starters the Callow Inne pub is on-site, opposite a pleasant village green style beer garden. There's also a well-equipped shop, a restaurant open for breakfast, lunch and dinner (the pub also serves food) and several fully-equipped toilet blocks.

Loch Ness Shores camping caravanning club site

Campers and locals mingle at this spectacular display on the banks of Loch Ness, organised and run by the local fire service and taking place on November 3rd. Plonked right on the banks of Loch Ness, there’s no better campsite to enjoy the stunning scenery of Britain’s most famous stretch of water. Nessie can be quite shy, but locals insist he/she does make the odd appearance, so make sure your youngsters have got a pair of binoculars to hand.

Even if the monster doesn’t show itself, there’s a good chance of sighting some of the more traditional wildlife, such as red squirrels, badgers, otters, bats and deer, not to mention the 40 species of birds that visit the site and surrounding area. Facilities are to a five-star standard, including Wi-Fi, fresh water (sourced locally on site) and under-floor heating in both the reception/shop and amenity block, which includes home-from-home shower rooms. There are also wigwam glamping cabins available to hire if you’re looking for somewhere cosy to sleep.

Golden Valley

Golden Valley’s huge firework display takes place on Saturday 3 November at 7.30pm, with an onsite cafe/bar serving a variety of refreshments, an upstairs disco and children’s amusements. It’s £30 per tent, for a two night minimum stay, starting on the Friday. This is a large and well-run site with lots of facilities that caters for caravans, campervans and tents.

Set in 26 acres of woodland the site has toilet and shower facilities that are kept clean and tidy and separate areas for tents and caravans. Tents are on grass pitches and caravans have hard standing and both can get electric hook-ups if needed.  Also on site you will find three play areas, a fishing pond, a bouncy castle, a train ride around the park. There is also a camping accessory shop and Wi-Fi.

Herding Hill farm

The annual bonfire and Halloween weekend at Herding Hill is always a lively event, with prizes for the best fancy-dressed child, parent, tent, caravan or wigwam. The fireworks are animal friendly and you can enjoy hot soup and home made pizzas. The bonfire night celebrations take place on Friday 3 November and Saturday is a Halloween themed day. This is a five-star site situated in Hadrian’s Wall Country and just one mile from the wall itself.

Surrounding scenery includes fields and rolling hills and this is a walker’s paradise. Some of the best sections of Hadrian’s Wall are close by and Vindolanda is three miles away. As well as tent and touring pitches, glamping accommodation comprises of wooden wigwams or nomadic-style tipis. The facilities block has a sauna, a playground with a Roman fort and petting farm, and also the handy option to have the famous pizzas delivered to your pitch!

Pillaton hall farm

Saturday night is bonfire night at Pillaton Hall Farm, with a themed firework display, big bonfire, food, music, bar and a Guy Fawkes competition. It’s a two night minimum stay and you must be onsite on Friday – no arrivals are allowed on Saturday.  Pillaton Hall is a haven of peace and quiet and a great place for a short break or longer holiday.

The campsite reception is also the check in point for fishermen wanting to use on the four well stocked fishing lakes that are here too.  From the site there are pleasant views of the surrounding farmland and great views of nearby Cannock Chase.  The site has two play areas – one for younger children and one for older kids.

Holgates Silverdale

The Holgates Silverdale annual bonfire and fireworks display will be held on Saturday 4 November 2017. Later, you can grab a bite to eat in the bar and enjoy the evening entertainment.

Located right on the southern slope of Arnside Knott – a rocky outcrop overlooking Morecambe Bay – this extensive site boasts every conceivable modern facility in a superbly managed holiday complex complete with bar, restaurant, swimming pool and wonderful views out over Morecambe Bay.
