WHAT’S IT LIKE?

In the last couple of years we’ve noticed a new phenomenon emerging in the camping world – let’s call them “empty tenters”. Their children have grown up and left home and after years of operating as an unpaid taxi/cafe/washing service for their offspring, they suddenly have the time and money to spend their weekends doing stuff they want to do. And for many, that means lots of camping trips.

The huge family tents that they used for summer holidays with the kids are surplus to requirements, but while in the past they might have been happy to crawl into a tiny, two-berth tent, that’s not an option these days. With a few more miles on the clock and a bit more money to spend they can afford to splash out on the sort of luxury and comfort that the Utopia TC 500 from Vango offers.

It’s a top-of-the-range tent with loads of space and features – and at more than £1,000, it certainly a premium product with a premium price. But if you can afford it, why not? After a few weekends away it will have paid for itself and if you treat it properly, this is a tent that should last for years to come.

The Utopia has plenty of living space for two, with the “villa construction” maximising floorspace and providing enough room for furniture. The bedroom is big enough for a double airbed and the divider can be zipped out to create one large space or left in place – to create another room that can be used as a small double bedroom, dressing room or just for storage.
