OUR VERDICT The vis-à-vis layout is great for families with older children and, for the price, this is a brilliant little tent.
For small families looking for more privacy or couples for weekend breaks
When your kids are young, tunnel tents are the perfect set-up. They provide plenty of living space during the day and, at night, allow the youngsters to sleep alongside you in the bedroom area.
But as they get older this becomes a less appealing prospect. The children want their privacy and so do you – and if you can still persuade them to come camping when they hit the dreaded teenage years, frankly, the more distance you can put between you and their feet the better.
That’s where vis-à-vis – literally face-to-face – tents come in. The layout features bedrooms at both ends, facing each other over a central living area. It means you can sleep at one end and put your darling offspring at the other, with plenty of space in between.
The Gemini is a good-sized vis-à-vis tent for up to four – and comes in at a very good price, considering the quality. Over the last decade, Olpro has carved a niche in the market, producing good family tents that are exceptional value for money, and this is another example.
The rip stop flysheet with a hydrostatic head of 5,000mm is up there with the best and the tent has all the features you’d expect, from PVC windows, mesh panels and sewn-in groundsheets, to a lantern hanging hook, cable entry point and front canopy, with poles included.
It’s not a huge tent but it’s spacious enough for a small family or a couple and the bedrooms are both big enough for a double airbed. Pitching is also really easy.
