SOLAR power sounds fine in theory but I’ve yet to find a small charger worth the weight and financial penalty. However, the Freeloader Pico has almost converted me. This compact (105mm x 45mm x 11.5mm) and lightweight (49g) unit charges the internal 800mAh lithium ion battery via either its solar panel or from a USB port. Charging takes ten-plus hours via the solar panel or around four hours through an electric source. It then takes only around 30 minutes to deliver its power to most mobile phones, GPS or mp3 players via one of four connection tips that come with the master cable.
I tend to charge the Pico before a camping trip. It is then ready to charge my mobile and mp3 player a couple of times. I wouldn’t rely purely on the solar panel to fully recharge the Pico but it is OK for a top up.
