SOFT shell is a superb fabric for campers. Windproof, highly water resistant, quick drying and hardwearing – just the features you need when active around the campsite. And Craghoppers’ new Base Trek jacket is a really smart version that’s a delight to wear. In fact, mine is worn daily around the house as a good-looking top instead of the usual jumper.
This is a contemporary looking soft shell with lightweight knit-look fleece sections for a modern feel. Toughness is not compromised for all areas that might be subjected to wear are made in the standard soft shell finish. This, along with the scoop back, also provides windproof protection to vital organs.
The Base Trek features a SmartDry water repellent finish that apparently even allows lightweight cotton to shrug off showers without the use of harmful fluorocarbons. This works as long as pressure (for instance, flexing of elbow and shoulder, or wearing a rucksack) does not force water through the fabric. And it means the jacket dries quickly.
The jacket has one chest and two hip pockets – all zipped. It has a hem and neck drawcord to keep out the drafts, but the self-fabric cuffs are non-adjustable.
Expect to pay £60
