What is the Coleman Vail 4 like?

With a heritage stretching back more than 120 years, the people at Coleman certainly know a thing or two about camping gear and tents. So, when you open one of their tents you can be confident that it’s going to do the business, even if it falls into the ‘budget’ price bracket. The RRP for this tent is £400, but we’ve found it online for under £280, which is an absolute bargain.

The Vail 4 is spacious family tunnel tent, with separate sleeping and living areas, and plenty of headroom throughout.

Although it doesn’t have all the features you’ll find in some Coleman tents – most notably, there are no BlackOut Bedrooms – the Vail is a good-quality tent that provides comfort, robustness and durability in any weather conditions. And when it comes to budget tents, that is the one aspect the design you can’t compromise on.

The polyester flysheet has a decent hydrostatic head rating of 4,000mm as well as fully taped seams, and combined with the sewn-in groundsheet the inside of the tent should remain nice and dry in heavy rain.

The front door has a deep front canopy that provides protection from the elements as you enter and leave.

Coleman’s UVGuard is usewd to treat the flysheet, providing SPF50 protection from the sun and hopefully increasing its longevity.

The tent's outer fabric is also fire retardant – it’s designed not to flare up dangerously if it catches light and will self-extinguish.

This should provide the sort of reassurance and peace of mind that new campers are always seeking.

Other features on the Vail 4 include barrier-free access to ensure easy movement in and out of the tent, large PVC windows in the living area, XXL bedrooms and cable openings for electric-hook up.

Pitching the Vail 4 is quick and easy, even for one person. The fibreglass poles are lightweight and flexible so are easy manoeuvre into place, and are strong enough to copy with strong winds and storms.
