The Caravan Club has a new name from today, namely the Caravan and Motorhome Club, which it hopes will encourage more people into getting outdoors.

The Club is 110 years old and, it says, 'represents more than one million caravanners, motorhomers, and trailer tent owners in the UK'. Being part of the club allows members access to caravan and motorhome sites around the UK and the world.

Launching the new name of the club at the NEC show, chairman Grenville Chamberlain, stated:

“This is an exciting and historic moment for our Club. While the heart of our community remains the same, our new name reflects how our membership has changed and grown. We will focus on developing pioneering new ideas and services which share our expertise, inspire and welcome everyone to the freedom of exploring and enjoying adventures in the great outdoors.”

He continued by saying that the club will upgrade all their UK sites to include wifi by the end of 2017, and they will develop their 'worldwide travel options' for members.

The Caravan and Motorhome Club's new name reflects 40% of its new members are motorhome owners. The club wants to help its members enjoy the great outdoors and pursue their hobbies, such as walking, wild swimming, surfing or just getting away from it all in their caravans or motorhomes.

More people go outdoors

The number of caravan, motorhome and camping trips is the highest since 2006, according to a recent report by the club. The Caravan and Motorhome Club expects more than 16 million trips this year. In addition, the club expects that the number of caravan and motorhomes in circulation in the UK will increase from 755,000 today to around 800,000 by 2022.

Top reasons for having a caravan or motorhome

The Caravan and Motorhome Club Inspiring Adventure Report revealed the main reasons people have for owning a caravan or motorhome, too.

  • Freedom to do their own thing (45%),
  • The sense of adventure (38%),
  • The flexibility to change plans as they travel (28%),
  • To set an itinerary to suit their timeframes (20%)
  • To stay in really rural locations, to be close to places they love like beach or mountains and as a more affordable holiday option (19%)
  • To get closer to nature and because they just love being outdoors and waking up to fresh air (18%).

Interestingly, respondents in the report also said that having a motorhome or caravan made it much easier to travel with groups of friends, or to camp in comfort at festivals. Furthermore, a caravan or motorhome made it easier for people to take part in their sporting hobbies, such as golfing, surfing or skiing.
