Spectacular Scene As Hillwalkers Light Up Peak District Trail
This was the spectacular scene as hundreds of trekkers lit up one of the country’s most popular walks.
Around 600 hillwalkers wearing headtorches illuminated the Great Ridge in the Peak District National Park.
The walkers formed a continuous two mile-long line of light that followed the shape of the sweeping ridge.
TV presenter and outdoor lover Julia Bradbury joined forces with Made in Chelsea’s Sam Thompson at the Great Ridge, as they launched National Camping and Caravanning Week.
The duo were encouraging as many people as possible to get out walking and camping in the British countryside as part of this year’s NCCW, which runs between 28 May and 3 June.
Julia is the president of the Camping and Caravanning Club, which is behind the week-long celebration of all things camping and the great outdoors. This year the Club has joined forces with the British Mountaineering Council (BMC) to highlight the Mend Our Mountains: Make One Million campaign, which aims to tackle runaway footpath erosion in the UK’s 15 national parks.
The aim was to showcase the incredible trails in the country’s National Parks, highlight the Mend Our Mountains message of protecting them, and encourage more people to explore the amazing places in the UK during NCCW.
Julia said: “I hope my night trekking and camping with Sam in the Peak District inspires everyone to push themselves out of their comfort zone, challenging themselves with an outdoor adventure and experiencing the delights of the great British countryside. Country walking is the number one pastime of campers and we all need to play a part in protecting our footpaths. As ever, I'm thrilled to champion and support these wonderful organisations.”
Sam added: “As a camping novice, I couldn’t wait to throw myself in at the deep end by helping to light up the Great Ridge, especially followed by a restful night glamping in the great outdoors – it’s certainly different to Chelsea!”
Julia and Sam camped at a Club Certificated Site next to Great Ridge, Fields Farm at Castleton.
