Inside the luxury glamping site where Prince Harry and Meghan Markle fell in love
Royal couple Prince Harry and Meghan Markle fell in love after spending five nights camping together under canvas.
But where did the lovebirds enjoy their nights under the stars?
Just weeks after first meeting on a blind date, the couple spent five days together on a camping trip in Botswana.
After announcing their engagement, Harry told the BBC: “We camped out with each other under the stars. She came and joined me for five days out there, which was absolutely fantastic.
“We were really by ourselves, which was crucial to me to make sure we really got to know each other.”
The couple returned to the Southern African country for Meghan’s 36th birthday earlier this year – and reportedly stayed at the £560-a-night Meno a Kwena campsite. Harry, patron of the charity Rhino Conservation Botswana, is said to have visited the five-star site on several occasions in the past.
Harry and Meghan would have stayed in one of the bush camp's nine luxurious Meru tents, all with en-suite bathrooms and outdoor shower. The camp also has a swimming pool, bar and restaurant.
As well as enjoying the luxury glamping accommodation, well-heeled guests at Meno a Kwena can spend romantic evenings by the campfire, gazing out over Makgadikgadi Pans National Park or embark on a boat safari along the river at dusk.
Situated midway between Botswana’s Okavango Delta and the spectacular Central Kalahari Game Reserve, Meno a Kwena offers guests “a unique African wildlife experience”.
The camp overlooks the Boleti river that is often filled with elephants and other animals enjoying a drink, allowing visitors to watch the wildlife without ever leaving their bedroom. From June through to October guests can view the Great Zebra Migration and watch as thousands of zebra run past the camp.
Of course, no-one would visit such a spectacular destination, without exploring the local environment and from the camp you can head off on safari tours of the Kalahari or the open plains and desert wildlife of the National Park. Here you can see meerkats and antelopes and if you’re lucky you’ll be able to spot lions and cheetahs in the Kalahari.
During the dry season you’ll be able to spot large herds of wildebeest and zebra, elephants, giraffe, antelope, rhino, hippos and crocodiles. Indeed, Meno a Kwena literally means ‘teeth of the crocodile’ – although thankfully the resort’s pool is guaranteed to be crocodile-free!
Locals also take guests on walking tours that provide an insight into the indigenous culture, as well as the area’s native plants and spectacular wildlife.
