Has the glamping bubble burst?

Glamping is not as popular as the hype would suggest, according to new statistics.

Booking website www.pitchup.com has revealed that while glamorous camping has a high media profile, it has still not caught on among the general public.

Just 1.4% of holidaymakers booked an August bank holiday weekend glamping stay through www.pitchup.com, putting it way behind all other types of accommodation.

Tents, tourers and motorhomes accounted for 92% of bookings. Lodges, cabins and pods came in at 3.9% and static caravans were preferred by 2.4%.

According to the figures, the nation’s favourite outdoor holiday spot is Cornwall (25%) with Devon following up at 15%. The remainder of bookings were spread across the UK with Dorset (8%), North Yorkshire (5%) and Pembrokeshire (4%) the next most popular.

Dan Yates, founder of www.pitchup.com, said: “Since we launched Pitchup.com in 2009, Cornwall has always ranked top for the preferred holiday destination.

“I was not really surprised by the glamping figures.  Brits are traditional types and these accommodation types have been popular for generations: statics and lodges are becoming more luxurious all the time and for those who already have the equipment, there really is nothing quite like staying in a proper motorhome, tourer or tent – whatever the weather!”
