Free Wi-Fi now available at 85% of Camping and Caravanning Club sites
The Camping and Caravanning Club now has Free Wi-Fi at most of its UK sites, according to a recent news release.
The Club has also increased the wi-fi range and coverage at another 29 sites this winter.
The wider access now makes it easier for caravanners to search and book activities, shop online, check their emails and social media accounts.
The Club says the speed of their free wi-fi, in most circumstances, should make visitors' online access good enough for carrying most of their day-to-day web activities.
Free Wi-Fi investment response to demand
The Club responded to members who said they want to stay connected to the internet when away from home.
Club sites director, Bob Hill, said:
"While we're big advocates for disconnecting from technology when enjoying the great outdoors, we understand that sometimes a quick check of the emails or the ability to plan an onward journey can help make life a little easier."
When asked about the investment in free wi-fi across their UK sites, the Club said they've spent over £500,000 in their wi-fi infrastructure over the winter.
Club sites which are open all year, such as in Oxford and Canterbury, have free wi-fi now. More sites will have free wi-fi over the next few weeks when they open for the season.
Wi-fi coverage and speeds
To access the free wi-fi, you'll need to be within the range of an antenna on each site. Each antenna has a 50-100 metre range. The wifi-signal is easily disrupted by trees and other obstacles on site.
The strength of the wi-fi signal in rural locations varies depending on the terrain. Most of The Camping & Caravanning Club sites are in rural locations, which is part of their attraction. Club sites may have small hills and vegetation which gets in the way of the signal from an antenna to a visitor's devices.
In addition, depending on the demand from visitors, the speed of the signal may vary too. If many campers use the wi-fi at once and they try to stream videos, the speed available to everyone will drop.
Nevertheless, with the wider access to free wi-fi on the Club site, visitors can keep in touch with family and friends more easily. And, finding things to do in the local area will be much easier with internet access.
Some Cub sites don't have free wi-fi. There are:
- Corfe Castle
- Speyside by Craigellachie
- West Runton
