Popular children’s book characters Gruffalo and Mouse will play a part in encouraging outdoor activities at five Camping in the Forest campsites this summer.

Themed activity trails, giant wooden Gruffalo sculptures and a birthday forest picnic will help celebrate the 15th anniversary of Julia Donaldson’s award-winning book The Gruffalo.

From April 2014, visitors can join Mouse on his adventures in the forest through activity trails at five Camping in the Forest sites in the New Forest, Hampshire – Ashurst, Hollands Wood, Holmsley, Ocknell & Longbeech, and Roundhill. 23 further campsites across the country will host Gruffalo-related activities through to the end of September.

The five Camping in the Forest sites will celebrate Gruffalo birthday parties on Saturday 7 June with forest-inspired picnic ideas and activities.

Also in June, 15 giant wooden sculptures of the Gruffalo will be hidden in forests across England. Standing 7ft tall and all different, the statues are individually carved from selected Forestry Commission timber.

Details of trails, sculptures, and a birthday picnic party pack are available from www.forestry.gov.uk/gruffalo
