Campsites ‘attracting a younger crowd’

Quaint tea shops are out and skinny lattes are in, according to campsite owner Henry Wild.

He says that the average age of guests at Skelwith Fold, a large campsite in the Lake District, has been falling noticeably.

Wild reckons that 40 percent of his guests are under 45 years, where ten years ago the proportion was more like 20 percent.

The younger guests get up earlier, drink fancy coffees and eat croissants, and seek out adventurous activities like zip-wiring, mountain biking, and abseiling, he says.

"This year was a perfect demonstration of how younger visitors are helping to change the dynamics and character of holiday parks in a very positive way," said Wild.

One reason for the demographic shift is the increasing popularity of joint ownership, he added. "Grandparents and their grown-up children – often with their own young family – are clubbing together to buy a motorhome or touring caravan. It's a logical idea, with joint owners having 26 weeks each per year and halved running costs”.
