The scene of gruesome murder isn’t everyone’s idea of the perfect holiday destination… even if it’s a fictional death. But fans of the hit ITV drama Broadchurch are flocking to the Dorset seaside village where the detective series was filmed. The owners of a campsite overlooking the beach where stars David Tennant and Olivia Coleman filmed many of the scenes say bookings have trebled compared to last year.
The award winning drama – centred around the killing of an 11-year-old boy – is filmed in and around West Bay on the famous Jurassic Coast. Highlands End Holiday Park is situated on the hilltop above the village and has panoramic views over the countryside and coastline, including Eype Beach.
General Manager James Cox said “Broadchurch Fever” had resulted in a 196% increase in bookings year-on-year for camping pitches with bookings for lodges and appartments going up 57.8%.
He said demand had increased “dramatically” and was expected to remain high throughout 2015 as the second series was aired on ITV.
Last October, campers got a bird’s eye view as cast and crew filmed scenes for the second series of the murder mystery drama at the yellow hut on Eype Beach, which also featured in the first season.
Holidaymakers were asked not to take photographs of any plot spoilers but were able to watch as the scenes unfolded on the beach.
Highlands End is set in 150 acres of countryside overlooking the sea. Amenities include showers, laundry and drying facilities. On-site activities include an indoor heated pool, sauna and steam room, tennis court and pitch and putt. Also on-site is a bar and restaurant, plus a shop for groceries.
* Broadchurch is on ITV on Mondays at 9pm.
