A NEW festival is striding its way to the Lake District in September when Coniston will play host to its first-ever walking event.

Sponsored by Bridgedale, the festival will run from 28-30 September and will celebrate the unique landscape that Coniston has to offer both visitors and locals, and will feature a packed and diverse programme to suit everyone.

Coniston has a long-standing history of geology and geography, from the copper mines and slate quarries that once employed the vast majority of the villagers, to the dramatic rise of Coniston Old Man, towering over the valleys, and the huge expanse of Coniston Water renowned for Donald Campbell’s record-breaking speed attempts.

The walking festival will reveal and celebrate this history through a series of themed walks where people can literally follow in the footsteps of the adventurers, artists, poets, and philosophers that drew their inspiration from its magical landscape.

In addition to the day’s walking, the festival will also feature a packed evening programme – which aims to set Coniston apart from traditional walking festivals – the highlight of which will be the Kendal Mountain Festival Film Tour, showcasing examples of the best and most dramatic new films on mountain sports and culture from around the globe.

Bookings can be made through the Coniston Tourist Information Centre on 015394 41533, or visit www.conistonwalkingfestival.org for more information.
