Campsites on the North Coast 500

4a61cfde-3ace-4233-9cb1-d75cd948d651

The North Coast 500 is a spectacular 516-mile circular route round the most northerly tip of the Scottish mainland.

It is very popular for camping road trips and there are many very good campsites along the route.

Camping on the North Coast 500 allows you to travel a section by day, either by car, motorbike or even bicycle then spend the night in your tent.

You could also set up base at a campsite for a few days and explore different areas of the far north of Scotland in more detail.

Here is a selection of campsites you can stay at while exploring the North Coast 500.

APPLECROSS CAMPSITE
Applecross, Strathcarron, Ross-Shire IV54 8ND
01520 744268
The sicampte lies above the tiny village of Applecross and has more than six acres of open field camping space, offering seaviews towards Raasay, Rhona and and Skye. There is a shower block with free hot showers and two extra family units which have a shower, basin and toilet. The laundry room contains a washing machine, tumble dryer, and payphone.

SHORE CARAVAN SITE
106 Achmelvich, Lochinver, Sutherland IV27 4JB
01571844393
A beautiful family-run beachside campsite with dramatic views in all directions. The location is glorious with both stunning sea and mountain views and the amazing beach. The site has a toilet and shower block and a small launderette. There is a small shop selling basics and a chip shop which opens certain days in the main holiday period. Electric hook-ups are available for campers and there’s WiFi on offer.

SANGO SANDS
Sango Bay, Durness, Sutherland IV27 4PZ
01971 511726/07838381065
This is a brilliant campsite, right on the edge of Sango Sands beach in Durness. It has 58 electric hook-up points, some hardstanding and some on grass. Lots of space for tents and there are toilet blocks, showers, a campers’ kitchen, dishwashing facilities and a laundry. There’s a bar and restaurant alongside the campsite, which also does takeaway.

INVER CARAVAN PARK
Houstry Road, Dunbeath, Caithness KW6 6EH
01593 731441
A small but perfectly formed campsite that is just off the A9 but is surrounded by glorious countryside and enjoys views to the sea. The facilities block was recently upgraded and now has double glazing and underfloor heating throughout. There are three private shower rooms, including one suitable for disabled visitors. In the laundry room, you’ll find a washing machine, a sink for hand washing clothes and an iron and ironing board. There’s no tumble drier but given the amount of wind, drying clothes on the washing line is not a problem!
