Muswell
There was an article in the London Evening Standard on 6 Feb which said that Ford and Mercedes vans are the most commonly stolen vehicles using keyless methods. Also that vehicles are stolen to order and that many are immediately stripped down In "slaughter houses" or "chop houses" in as little as 30 minutes and the components exported as far away as Africa where engines can fetch up to £1000 while whole vehicles can go for £10 000. Mine was probably stripped , because as a motor home it would have been too risky to sell. :'(
PJay
So stick to Fiats then?
spartan3956
Had my Fiat stolen dozy manufacturer made the diesel tank cap with same key as ignition so they stole the cap and got a key cut Just drove off. Dont rely on manufacturers security alone they can beat it.
Guest Joe90
So how did they overcome the lack of a transponder in the new key, never mind being able to walk in somewhere with just a mangled fuel cap and get a key cut, that was a pretty neat trick, might come in handy to know ? sheer lunar-see
So, go get a removable steering wheel, bet they wont come with a spare one !!!! best anti theft device I've got.
the general
As ratio to vans on UK roads fords are most likely to be stolen , I put a chain thru steering wheel and threaded thru seat base in fact I might do TWO now ,they will need bolt croppers now!!! Or hacksaw !!!! Any ideas for more visible security ? Any way more demand for fords than fiats on the black market .

It seems that vehicle theft is no longer opportunist but is done by specialist gangs who are well equipped.
thebishbus
A good anti theft device, is a hidden or key operated immobilizer switch. Depending on which type of vehicle you have, it can either switch of the ignition or fuel pump, or be wired in series with the vehicle impact immobilizer switch. When I fit one, I use a double pole double throw switch, one side connected to 12 volts and a flashing LED to indicate that the immobilizer is on. Brian B. Will86
Years ago we removed the rotor arm for security. Surely there's some way of removing a vital part or a similar item that prevents the engine being started. Will
sheer lunar-see
In repiy to Muswell, My van is a 2002 fiat and didn't have one, so the problem didn't arise.
Guest Joe90
I'm still pondering the idea of a removable steering wheel as suggested above, ;-) just need to convince the missus it would be as essential item for her to carry in her handbag. Bulletguy
Hope the owner gets his van back. There are some very nasty people about. A 28 year old guy stopped to help a 43 year old truck driver whose lorry had overturned on the M602......only for the truck driver to jump in the guys van and drive off dragging him along the motorway. He suffered serious head injuries and at one point his condition was critical. Police arrested the truck driver but for some odd reason have been unable to trace the stolen van. http://www.manchestereveningnews.co.uk/news/greater-manchester-news/man-critically-injured-after-being-8748061
