Dometic Recall

Hi,

I've just recieved a phone call from Dometic Germany telling me to contact Solihull Caravans to have the recall work done. I've done this and have now got a date in mid January. Living in north Oxfordshire this is the nearest dealer that is authorised by Dometic to do the work. It has taken about three weeks from my last contact with Dometic so considering the likely scale of the problem I'm reasonably happy, at least the work will be done a couple of weeks before I go away again.

I received a phone call today from Dometic(Germany) asking me to contact a caravan dealership not too far away to arrange for the recall work to be carried out on my motorhome's fridge/freezer. (So, if you do telephone Dometic's help-line number about this it seems that you won't be forgotten!)

My understanding now (and hopefully someone will correct me if I'm wrong) is that the recall relates to possible fracturing of a strip-metal bracket. A 20mm diameter black 'cooling-tube' emerges horizontally from the gas-burner assembly: one end of the bracket is welded to the underside of the cooling-tube part way along and the other end is screwed to the rear wall of the fridge. If the bracket fractures a gas leak may well result.

The work involved has been described in an earlier posting

Provided that Dometic's double-depth ventilation grille is fitted at the fridge's base, carrying out the modification should not present difficulties.

As you may know from anothyer thread I'm having an ongoing battle with Dometic. But as a result they did get my recall work done for me yesterday so I'm in a good position to comment.

The engineer came to my home in Essex to do it. I had offered to take it to my local Dometic agent but was told that they "aren't equipped to deal with it"

The work consists of checking a screw to see if it's the "dodgy" type (mine wasn't) and fitting 2 extra brackets which are pop rivetted to the back of the fridge. Total job time was around 10 minutes. In fact the paperwork was the most time consuming part.

The engineer told me that Dometic pay him £10.80 per job which, he thinks, is the reason that most dealers are "not equippped to do it" They just aren't interested in a 10 quid job.

The Dometic recall being discussed here relates only to 7-Series 2-door fridge/freezers and Tec-Tower combination oven/fridge/freezers based on those appliances. The following links refer to earlier comments and provide details of model and serial numbers of the appliances affected:

Your last paragraph's observation is very likely correct. A motorhome dealer acquaintance of mine told me that he had initially decided he wouldn't take on the recall work as it wasn't worth the bother, but then concluded it would be better for his customers (and good will) if he did. Small jobs like this will be a nuisance to a busy company, particularly when the financial reward is as small as the Dometic engineer told you.
