LINCOLN CATHEDRAL
For many a visit to Lincoln Cathedral is the high point of their visit to the city. Lincoln Cathedral is one of the greatest gothic buildings of Europe and is the third largest Cathedral in the UK. The magnificent Cathedral boasts beautiful 12th century carved panels, exquisite stained glass windows, and the fearsome gargoyles. Visitors are encouraged to look out for the Lincoln Imp and to spot the filming locations of ‘The Da Vinci Code’ and ‘The Young Victoria’. LINCOLN CASTLE
Explore over 900 years of rich history at the imposing Lincoln Castle. This famous Norman castle is home to one of the four surviving copies of the 1215 Magna Carta, the legal document that bound King John to his Barons and the English Monarchy to the law. Take a walk around the grounds and see how it has been used across the centuries, see Cobb Hall where felons were publically executed, experience life in a Victorian Prison and enjoy breathtaking wall walks, which provide magnificent views across the stunning historical city of Lincoln. BISHOP'S PALACE
For sweeping views across the city look no further than Bishops Palace which stands in the shadow of the beautiful Lincoln Cathedral. This palace was once one of the most important buildings in the country and now gives its visitors the chance to taste the medieval high life. Today the immense halls are in ruins, but visitors can explore the dramatic ruins with an award winning audio tour and enjoy the formal garden which is home to one of Europe’s most Northerly Vineyards. MUSEUM OF LINCOLNSHIRE LIFE
Explore yesteryear at The Museum of Lincolnshire Life located in the city centre. The museum offers visitors a collection that covers all aspects of social history with many wonderful and fascinating stories and objects to discover that celebrate rural Lincolnshire. Pieces on display include an authentic world war one tank and many crafts and exhibits that illustrate the agricultural and industrial history of Lincolnshire people. The museum is situated in some old barracks originally built for the Loyal North Lincoln Militia in 1857. Admission to the museum is free.
ELLIS WINDMILL
For an old-fashioned experience make sure you visit Ellis Windmill in the centre of Lincoln. Enjoy wandering around a by-gone era in the glorious 18th century working mill before buying some of the windmills flour to take home. The mill is open all week 2pm-6pm. Admission is free.
USHER GALLERY
Take some time to visit the Usher Gallery, a fantastic art gallery housed in a classically styled building set in the beautiful grounds of the Temple Gardens. The gallery houses an exquisite collection of decorative art from a range of museums and private collections. After soaking in the culture why not take a leisurely stroll in the stunning Temple Gardens or relax in the gallery cafe which offers a delicious range of food. The gallery is open Monday - Sunday 10am - 5pm and admission is free.
LINCOLN GHOST WALKS
For spine chilling spooky fun look no further than the Lincoln Original Ghost Walk and delve into Lincoln’s macabre past. Take a walk around the city, learn about Lincoln’s sinister side from murders to tortured prisoners and hear about some of the spooky happenings. The guided tours around Lincoln take place on Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday for 52 weeks of the year. Tours start at 7pm prompt. For more information visit www.lincolnhistorywalks.co.uk
SHOPPING
Bailgate is the quirky shopper’s paradise. Stroll through the quiet streets and cobbled lanes to discover independent boutiques, delis, quirky gift shops and art galleries, including the famous Reader’s Rest, a bookshop which has a labyrinth of nooks and crannies stacked with books, a must see for any book worm. The choice and charm of shops as you explore Bailgate is enchanting and anyone from a vintage fashionista to an antique hoarder will find something here. Mind your head as you step inside the medieval doorways and pick up some unique finds to take home. If high street shopping is more your style then search for some bargains in the high street quarter and The Waterside Shopping Centre which are full of brand names and stores including Marks and Spencer, Primark and Debenhams to name but a few.
EATING IN LINCOLN
No visit to the city of Lincoln would be complete without sampling some of the wide variety of restaurants on offer. If you prefer life’s simple pleasures why not pop into one of the many pubs and traditional restaurants dotted around the city including The Treaty of Commerce, one of Lincoln’s oldest restaurant pubs or The Bull and Chain which serves traditional Lincolnshire pub grub. If you prefer a more modern meal then why not stop at Nandos, Pizza Express, Prezzos, The Slug and Lettuce and many more located in the city centre.
If you enjoy old-fashioned charm then visit The Ice Cream Parlour, a shop bursting with character, pop in and sample one of the wide range of flavours and take a trip to a by-gone age.
